Hi, Please use the following steps to check if the credential for accessing the share folder is stored: 1. Click Start, type control userpasswords2 and press Enter. 2. In the User Accounts window, click Advanced, click Manage Passwords and check if the credential is stored. I look forward to your reply.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. The credential was not stored. Then I have created the credential by administrator login and used this credential for the domain user. But still the problem is same. After restart or log off it asks for the password.

Hi, Please confirm ifthe credential created manually is removed after restart or log off. Thanks. I look forward to your reply.

I'm having the exact same problem, and was hoping to see a solution. It drives me crazy having to log into shares a hundred times a day :-) Has there been a solution yet?

What version of Vista?(also, what version of XP were you using that did work the way you expected?)
May 21st, 2008 6:39am

I have Vista Home Premium installed now, without SP1. Earlier, before my recent reload of the OS, the same happened with Vista Home Premium with SP1. XP SP2 does save the login to domain shares so that you only have to log in once. Just in case it's not clear, what I have is a Vista laptop that I use to access the domain at work. I have the workgroup name the same as the domain name. A possibly related problem, is that when I log on to the laptop (local), important Intel drivers load, and Vista asks if it should load them or not. They should all load. I click the checkbox for "don't ask me this" each time, and it doesn't remember my answer, so I have to answer 4 questions each time Vista boots up. Then I have to log in each time I want to access a network share or print. And I have to answer a question every time I change a setting. I think this isn't real good for productivity :-)

I'll hazard a guess that you're referring to XP Professional SP2, yes?The Home versions of Vista (Home Basic, and Home Premium) don't have Cached Credentials (the feature that remembers your network-share logon info) - that feature is reserved for the business versions (Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate.)Your second problem isn't related to the first. 32- or 64-bit version? Are the drivers in question signed? (check in Device Manager for this.)
May 21st, 2008 2:45pm

32 bit Vista, and yes, XP Pro. I haven't checked the device driver signing yet, but I see where that goes and will check it out. Should the "don't ask me" check box remember my answer, or does that get ignored because of security settings? Vista Ultimate should be able to cache credentials, shouldn't it?I bought the Ultimate upgrade for Vista Business over a year ago, but couldn't get it installed because I couldn't download some number into the computer after buying it, and I finally gave up after many phone calls to Microsoft and hours on hold. I had to consider it a donation to Microsoft. I have 5 bulk licenses for Vista Business as well (so I have a MAK license for them all), but Microsoft has them listed as all being used, although they actually haven't been installed on any computers for over a year. I installed it on two computers originally, but neither worked well with Vista and I took it off both. I had reloaded them both with Vista a couple of times because of problems before I gave it up, so I suppose that's why the licenses are all listed as being used. I asked if MS people if the Ultimate upgrade didn't work because of the licensing method (while Vista business was still installed on one), but didn't get an answer. This is a new laptop now, which came with the home premium version of Vista. I had to use it since I can't use the Vista business licenses. I ran on Ubuntu for awhile with the new computer, but it didn't cache credentials either, and had a couple of other serious limitations, so now it's a dual boot. However, those are different issues. I hate to get back into trying to untangle all that licensing stuff, but I guess I'll have to. It's aggravating to have wasted all that money buying Vista licenses that I can't use. For Microsoft in general, the licensing mechanism needs some work. It's fine to protect against illegal copies of Windows, but if your customers pay for something and can't use it in legal ways because of your licensing mechanisms, it comes across pretty badly. Who can afford or would be willing to buy a new copy of Vista everytime they reload their computer or upgrade a hard drive? Thanks for your help and quick answers. If you can help with the licensing issues (like give me a sure number to call or a page to go to in order to solve the problems) that would be great. But it's not exactly a technical issue :-)

So I pay an arm and a leg for this software, have the avaibility to map a network drive or add a shared printer, but can't save the password. That is garbage! Everything from ME and up has been able to cache passwords and in their newest and best software theytake a vital piece away from the user. Do these guy really want to loose business to Mac or what? I love most of the MS software and products but that is just ridiculous. Idea: add it to a service pack so home network users don't tell them where they can go. I have 5 computers in my home with a network printer and a shared color. I also have mapped drives on my network as well. Having to type the password in everytime I go to one of those maps is annoying. And having to show my children how to log in to the computer with the shared printer is taking away from my security.

I have the same problem. I have two computers with XP and one new notebook computer with Vista Home Premiumin my home network. The only one having this annoying problem is the new notebook computer. I regret that I got it with Vista installed. XP is a muchfriendlier operating system, and third party utilities keep it sufficiently secure.

<rant>I love it when people say "Vista doesn't do X, when XP did" without saying which version of XP (Home, Media Center, Tablet, or Professional) that they're referring to.</rant>
June 18th, 2008 2:23am

I doubt it would make much difference which version of XP. I don't have the problem on a desktop computer with XP Professional. My wife's notebook computer with XP Media Center does not have the problem. She has had a free upgrade CD sitting in an unopened box for the last year because she doesn't want to experience these Vista problems.

Face it, Microsoft screwed up with Vista, taking away too much basic functionality that all versions of XP and 2000 had.Microsoft is working on the false assumption that home users only work at home and only do certain things, and business users only work at work and only do certain things. I think it's a fatal mistake for MS operating systems. Vista Business is rarely even offered on new computers and laptops. You are stuck with Vista Home Pro on a new computer, or you can add the cost of buying a whole new operating system just so you can print on a network without a hassle. If you go to the unreasonable expense of buying a whole new operating system, you may find you can't even install it.Then, even with Vista business, the computer can't recognize the computers in a workgroup vs the computers on a subnet, and every time you want to get to a file share or printer in a big organization you have to look at hundreds of computers in a different domain (but the same subnet). XP would just look at your domain or workgroup. My old version of XP is pro SP2, now it would be SP3. What does it matter? Vista, after years of work, went out with serious problems. Devices don't work well, programs hang up, you can't get on a network without hassle, it doesn't remember lots of settings that it should remember. It's very pretty and has nice effects and doodads, but that doesn't overcome problems that it can have with fairly new equipment and programs. Even if 85% of it works fine, if that 15% which doesn't work are things you use every day, the OS has a serious problem. And then when you add the fact that Microsoft cheats people on the licensing, you have real trouble. At least open source has people working on the problems, and not charging you an arm and a leg for the solutions.

That's the difference - they're both Pro machines (MCE is based of off Pro.) That functionality is (due, I think, to marketing reasons) limited to the professional versions (2k; XP Pro/MCE/Tablet; Vista Business/Enterprise/Ultimate.) XP Home did not have that feature; therefore, Vista Home Basic/Home Premium does not.

No matter what edition of Vista, the "Remember my password" feature is displayed, and is shown in an active font. This is a bug. It seems to me that Microsoft spends too much time differentiating their products and too little time correcting problems with their products. As long as they have a monopoly position in the market, they may be able to get away with this, but eventually a viable competitor will appear.
June 30th, 2008 5:25pm

Not to be argumentative, but...I wouldn't call the Vista team's 'failure' to rewrite a significant part of the UI to hide a feature that they chose to disable on the 'lower' versions of the OS a 'bug.'I wouldn't even call it 'lazy', or 'sloppy coding.'If you feel that strongly about it, to the best of my knowledge, MS is still accepting feedback and comments on the OS. You might want to submit it that way.

Yes. I would consider this a design bug. As soon as they decided to differentiate the product, they should have isolated those features and functions that would be impacted. Their code should have allowed these items to be modified independently. If they are producing a single product, then they should market a single product. To me this is just an annoyance, but it is daily annoyance about the Vista operating system.

AHAHAHA, you're joking right? I've just been googling for this issue and found this thread. This is BEYOND ridiculous.

hi, No, there is no password or user stored in ADVANCED and then MANAGE PASSWORD. i also look forward to your reply too.

Hi, This problem is in Windows 7 Pro also! I had Vista Business (biggest OS mistake I ever made!) and it had the mapped network drive lost password problem too. In Windows 7, When you log into a Network Location and choose "remember my credentials", it forgets as soon as you restart windows. I checked in the list of credentials and it's definitely there, but still forgets to automatically connect and login during startup. What really frustrates me is that my wife's 5 year old Win XP Pro laptop doesn't have the problem. Not only that, but Microsoft don't have this listed anywhere in their knowledge base and there doesn't seem to be a fix for it. Has anyone figured out how to fix this problem yet? Thanks, Jonno

I keep most of my media on a centrally located MythTV box running Linux. I can share stream music to iTunes on my Mac by running mt-daapd and howl on my Linux box. With Windows XP, everything worked even better; all I had to do was access my music via a Samba share. Unfortunately with Vista that all changed. Vista would no longer remember passwords after a reboot. Some might say that this is inadvertently more secure. Vista refuses to remember the passwords to network shares. It doesn’t matter if I check the, “remember this password” box or not. Things just won’t work. Thankfully there is a solution; you can tell Vista to remember a password by: Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage Your Network Passwords. Addresses for Samba shares should look something like this: “\\MythTV” Enter in the address to the computer you’re trying to access. Hint, if you don’t know the address, access the computer via the “Network” shortcut on your desktop, right-click in the address bar and select “Copy Address as Text,” or “Copy Address.” Paste either of those into the address location field. After you’ve filed the address field, enter the passwords and save out. The next time you restart Vista it should remember saved passwords.Use Password Reset to Reset Windows Password
