Registry Permissions
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. Microsoft Project 2010 beta installation encounters MSI installer errors during installation. First it was this: Product: Microsoft Office Project Professional 2010 (Beta) -- Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\2.0\LocalReg\HxDs.HxRegister.1\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for assistance. For information about how to contact PSS, see C:\Users\CHRIST~1\AppData\Local\Temp\Setup000006b4\PSS10R.CHM. I manually granted myself permission in regedit. Although I should not have had to as I am the administrator. Then there was this error: Product: Microsoft Office Project Professional 2010 (Beta) -- Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\2.0\LocalReg\HxDs.HxRegister\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for assistance. For information about how to contact PSS, see C:\Users\CHRIST~1\AppData\Local\Temp\Setup00000adc\PSS10R.CHM. Again, I manually granted myself permission in regedit. Although I should not have had to as I am the administrator. This trend has continued and I am tired of manually granting myself permission for each key and then retrying installation and then manually granting myself permission for each key and then retrying installation and then manually granting myself permission for each key and then retrying installation..... I have tried using this script with Subinacl: subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f It runs, but with several thousand "failed" corrections. How do I reset the permissions in my registry?

Install the Virtual PC for Windows 7 and install it in the XP mode. Might be safer than the main system.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe See my site for detailed machine information

That is a viable option, but it in no way addresses the underlying problem: my registry permissions are messed up!

Then you will probably have to install Windows clean again. There are no good tools for Windows 7 yet.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe See my site for detailed machine information

I suggest you do In-place Upgrade to repair the system. Your personal data and applications will not be removed after repair. However I still suggest you backup important data before repairing.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I did an in-place upgrade and my registry permission problems have been corrected. Thanks again Arthur!
