Recycle bin icon problem, Windows exit and logon problem.
I've solved all the big problems with my new Windows 7 64-bit PC, now for the trivial problems:I have custom trash bins I use in place of the desktop recycle bins. The recycle bins both work perfectly, but my custom icons do not reflect the status of the bin until I right click on the desktop and click refresh! There was no problem with this back when I was running Vista SP2.The Windows Logon and Windows Exit sounds are both silent, even though I've set up the sounds exactly the same as when I was running Vista SP2.Can anyone help with either problem? Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill, How do you customize your trash bin? If you created it with a third party tool. You can import the following registry. Please make a backup for your registry.Pleasecopythe following commands, please click "File" and click "Save".'Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update]"UpdateMode"=dword:000000006. Type in "fix.reg" as the file name to save the file on the Desktop. Click "Save". 7. Go to the Desktop, double click "fix.reg". A dialog box will pop-up asking "Are you sure you want to add the information in fix.reg to the registry?". Click "Yes" on this dialog box.Note: The operation requires administrative privileges. Please click "Continue" when the User Account Control dialog-box appears.Asyour sound issue, you can test the default sound, or choose a short audio file to test. I hope this can help you.John

>>>How do you customize your trash bin?I assign different icons to Recycle (Full) and Recycle (Empty). The icons I use are much more visible on the desktop than the original clear recycle bins. My icons do not refresh when I empty or add trash to the bin, whereas the original icons work fine. If you'd like to try to see what I mean, here's my icons: http://aa4m.com/trash.zip I haven't tried creating a link in this forum before, hopefully it will work OK. If not, just copy/paste as needed.>>>Pleasecopythe following commands, please click "File" and click "Save".'Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update]"UpdateMode"=dword:00000000<<<Tried it, it did not work.>>>Asyour sound issue, you can test the default sound, or choose a short audio file to test.<<<I had done all that, but still no sound when I shut down or boot. All other sounds work normally/Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,Please fix your issue one by one, let's focus on the Recycle Bin issue first. You can try the tool to make the Recycle Bin icon refreshes correctly. You can get it from the following link:http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9661135I hope this can help you. John

Hi Bill,Please fix your issue one by one, let's focus on the Recycle Bin issue first. You can try the tool to make the Recycle Bin icon refreshes correctly. You can get it from the following link: Hi John,This didn't work, but then this link:http://support.microsoft.com/gp/mats#tab0 says that the "Fix it" fixes will not work on my Windows 7 PC. The page goes on to say that I should click "System and Security" in the Control Panel, then click "Troubleshoot common computer problems". My Control Panel does not have a System and Securityicon. So I went to the Administrative Tools in Windows Explorer, but there was noTroubleshoot common computer problems item to click! I dug around and found another thread where people are having trouble with the recycle bin icons:http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/GettingReadyforWindows7/thread/7aa022a9-67b9-4c71-b92c-55672c2b4987/As I said at the start of this thread - this is a trivial problem. But . . . it is also an irritating one!! :-)Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,If you can't apply the tool, you can try another method to fix the Recycle Bin issue.Manually reset the Recycle Bin icons------------------------------------------1. Right-click the Desktop and select Personalize.2. In the Tasks pane, click Change desktop icons.3. Select the Recycle Bin (full) icon and then click Change Icon.4. In the Change Icon dialog box, select the full Recycle Bin icon.5. Click OK to close the Change Icon dialog box.6. Select the Recycle Bin (empty) icon and then click Change Icon.7. In the Change Icon dialog box, select the empty Recycle Bin icon.8. Click OK to close the Change Icon dialog box.9. Click Apply, and then click OK. Check whether the problem is fixed by emptying the Recycle Bin or by deleting a file or a folder.John

Now, why nottest your computer in a new account. Good idea but it didn't work. I'm starting to think this is a bug in Windows 7 and we won't see a fix until SP1. . . if then.BTW - did you try different recycle bin icons on your system? If not, here's mine: http://aa4m.com/trash.zip- Bill

First, I would like to tell you that I am usingtwo customizediconsfor my recycle bins, and they both work fine.At this point, it's better to restore your computer before you change to customized. You can use the system restore function. John

Windows 7 for won't refresh custom icons if they are .ico files The problem was reported for beta and still does not work.Theworkaround is a bit time consuming and has to be reaplied each time you assign custom .ico files.First, find this key in your registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\DefaultIcon full=%SystemRoot%\Resources\Themes\bluemoon\full.ico,0 empty=%SystemRoot%\Resources\Themes\bluemoon\void.ico,0Second, the above key shows a comma and 0 after the example .ico files. Yours won't havethe comma and 0 soyou must addto make itlook like the above values. That will fix trash refresh. You can also correct the recyclevalues from theme files instead of the reg. Seasons greetings!

I had the refresh recycle bin problem since I installed Windows 7. I called Dell, Microsoft, and many many forums on the internet. No one seemed to understand what I was saying and no one had a solution. I ran across your solution and tried it and.................IT WORKED. You are a genius. My hat goes off to you!!!!!!!!!11 Keep up the good work.

I tried the edit registry method of adding the comma and zero. At first it didn't work but after clicking on refresh, it did.

I tried the edit registry method of adding the comma and zero. At first it didn't work but after clicking on refresh, it did. I have found an easier mehtod. Rename the .ico file extension to .exe and that way we do not need to modify the registry values. Very refreshing.

A much more convenient way to do this is to simply rename the icon files to "whatever(full).ico,0" and "whatever(empty).ico,0. Windows will still let you apply the icons to the Recycle bin and it will trick the registry into thinking that it has the correct parameters. Yay!
