Recovery login shutting down loop
I have a Dell E521 desktop with Vista Home Premium. I booted it, got to the sign on screen, typed screen name, PW, and when I hit the return key, Windows proceeded to go into "Windows is Shutting Down" and rebooted back to the sign in screen, as though I had selected the restart that option. It, again reached the sign in screen and repeats the restarting cycle. I was able to reach my desktop for a brief moment after a restore option (and in safe mode) but seconds later got "Windows is Shutting Down" I tried selecting several "safe mode" options but it would consistently go into "Shutting Down" On selecting a restore point It would give the error message that there was were errors on the drive . After selecting the prompt to scan/repair , I would get the message it could not be repaired (with no more options) and I would get the error message, to repair start up that resulted in "start up cannot be repaired." I found an article, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894278 that describes a virus, Reloadmedude.exe. that would seem to somewhat explain the symptoms I have. I would like to repair it but it may be easier in the long run to pull the drive and slave? it on another Vista desktop and get the my data off it before I reformat and reinstall Vista, which I would probably do regardless. my question is: What is the procedure and workarounds to read and copy my files over to another drive? Also, what permissions problems can I expect to run into. Any help greatly appreciated Thank you

I suggest you clean the hard drive and make sure virus free so that you can start migrating to a new setup. If you need more help with virus-related issues, please contact Microsoft Product Support Services. For support within the United States and Canada, call toll-free (866) PCSAFETY (727-2338). For support outside the United States and Canada, visit the Product Support Services Web page (http://support.microsoft.com/?pr=SecurityHome ). After cleaning up the virus on the hard drive, you can connect it to the new computer and start transfer data to the new hard disk. If you encounter any permission related issue, you can take ownership of the folder and then continue. You can refer to the following steps to take ownership of a folder: 1. Please navigate to the target file/folder. 2. Right-click on the file/folder and choose Properties. 3. Click the "Security" tab and see if your current user is listed in the "Group or user names" list. If not, please click the Add button, type the name of your current user in the "Enter the object names to select " box, then click "OK" to add this group. 4. Select the user from the list and then check the "Allow" checkbox next to "Full Control". 5. Click the Advanced button and click the "Owner" tab. Then, press "Edit" button. 6. Select current user from the list and check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" checkbox. 7. Click "OK" to save changes and wait for Windows Vista to transfer the ownership of all the objects on the partition. 8. Click OK again to save changes and exit the Properties window.
