Ok, last 2 days I've been having issues because I switched my disk format to GUID. I need atleast 2 OS's for my development needs (win7 and linux anything) and was aiming for a research/experimental OS to play with (plan9 v. 4), but the poor old MBR couldn't cut it with so many partitions and logical disks can only go so far. Now, I've enabled my mother board with efi support. First I installed gnacktrack v. 6 (an ubuntu 10.10 derivative) with a small ext4 boot part., a root part after that, and room for a 2nd unix like OS after that. At the end of the disk I put a 6GB swap partition(keeps changing to 15GB and no idea why, but that's besides the point) and a 10GB home part. after the 2nd empty ext4 part. I made a 64GB NTFS part. that windows would take to (it atleast sped up install alot...). Windows installed all happy, but since I had EFI support enabled (please understand this part better than 6 technicians and 4 IRC channels and other people...) so it added 2 or 3 partitions, 1 was EFI, 1 NTFS(or fat, didn't look carefully at this point). What this did in effect was that the BIOS handed control over the registered EFI which was not at all friendly with my linux install. The EFI part went beyond that and prevented BIOS access totally (again, don't know how exactly, its likely a mobo bug). I finally found out a way that made the windows boot loader recognize and boot from anything else and not the installed win 7 (separate issue, but leads to this) so I got back to a unix environment. In order to regain BIOS level access to the system I had to resort to recklessly deleting all windows boot related partitions. Now I have full control of my system, but can't boot into windows 7 for my other development needs. I know there's a moral to the story of just using VM's, but I am running low on win 7 installs.
