Rebuild GPT

Is there a way to rebuild a corrupt or missing GPT? I could write a couple of pages as to how I got to where I am but have a hard drive that is seen in Disk Management, and has all of it's partitions but it is not bootable and doesn't seem to see the recovery partition even though it is on the drive and all of the files are accessible.

Thank you

I think you might have the wrong term here... maybe you mean BCD instead?

What happens if you try to boot that disk?

What OS is installed on it?

Hi,

According to your description, it should be system boot file, bcd file missing or corrupt. How about using system startup repair to fix this problem? Please have a try.

Sorry I have been away so didn't see the replies until just now. I thought the GPT was the partition table and mine neither boots nor does it see the recovery partitions on the drive so assume the problem would have something to do with whatever keeps track of the partitions on the drive. I took the drive out and installed it in anther computer and it would appear all of the partitions are intact and I can access all of the files on the main partition as well as the two recovery partitions. I don't know if there is some program or utility that will rebuild whatever it is that tells the system what partitions there are and enables you to boot from either the main partition, or if that fails then from the recovery partition. I had a drive that had a corrupt MBR a while ago and there is a utility that rebuilds the MBR in a matter of seconds and then the drive was bootable again and it worked fine. I am not sure if there is a similar utility for a GPT disk?

Hello,

The first question is what is the exact error message that you getting when you are not booting, that can help determine some of the reasons for not booting.  Essentially where in the boot process the failures occurs.

1) you state you made a lot of changes, so GPT is used only with systems with firmware set to use EFI\UEFI, so make sure you bios is setup to use EFI\UEFI. So depending on the system , what are the options in the firmware for UEFI\EFI?

2) when you say all the partitions are present on that drive, what partitions are you seeing? ( if it's a GPT disk you should see at least an EFI System Partition, an MSR partition, and a Primary Partition

3) Is the active Partition set properly?  Was this the only disk in the system or were there other disks in the system at some point?

Sorry I just have been very busy and have not had a chance to get back at this issue. I hope to get back to it next week but would appreciate leaving this thread open so I can update it when I do get back at it.

Thank you
