ReadyBoost Missing From Services
I installed a 4 port USB hub on my Dell XPS desktop computer (with Windows 7 64-bit), and it caused a problem that resulted in me rebooting the system. I pulled off the USB hub and plugged in my 4 GB jump drive directly into the computer's USB port; which was running ReadyBoost without any problems prior to the reboot. Long story short, the computer asked me whether to enable ReadyBoost to that jump drive, and I said yes, but the ReadyBoost tab is missing. So, I reformatted the jump drive to FAT32 and tried again. Same results. Then I took the drive to another computer and ReadyBoost worked well on my laptop (Vista 64 bit). What I'm noticing is that when I look to see if the ReadyBoost service is running on the Windows 7 machine, it's missing; not in the list of services to enable. When I looked at my Vista system, services is showing ReadyBoost. I tried Restore to the previous day when ReadyBoost was working and that didn't solve it. I tried to reload a disk image too, but again, ReadyBoost Service is still missing, which is why the tab isn't showing. I then tried using another jump drive as well as a SD card and Windows 7 again asked if I want to use ReadyBoost. When I click yes, the properties window opens but the tab is missing. Any ideas how I can get the ReadyBoost service to run again?Thanks.

There is no ReadyBoost service in Windows 7 unlike in Vista ,see all Win 7 services:http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm see also http://www.thetechyblog.com/using-readyboost-in-windows-7/ I don't know which service is resposnsible for Ready Boost,neverless try update your system Make sure Superfetch service is started and startup type is auto

When you say to try to update my system, are you saying to reinstall Win 7 OS? I've done Windows Updates and it didn't pick up anything new.Thanks.

Of course not.I only mean to install the new updates from Windows Updates and nothing more.Did you check how Superfetch service work?As far as I know this service is now directly responsible for Ready Boost

Hi, The ready boost service exists in Registry. Click Start, type REGEDIT in the Start Search bar and press Enter. Navigate to the following key and check if the rdyboost exists. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\rdyboost If not, you can import it as below: Backup Registry =================== 1. Click Start, type REGEDIT in the Start Search bar and press Enter. 2. Select Computer (the root node) in the left pane, click Export under the File menu, choose All under Export range, select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. click Save. Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file. Vivian,I was able to get a friend with Windows 7 to send me his reg file and it didn't fix the problem. Also, ran the system scan and the verification came back as "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." Any other ideas?Thanks.

Tried all 3 actually, NTFS, FAT and FAT32. Again, Superfetch service is started and set to automatic. I'll try removing the sub values of EMDMgmt tonight. Unfortunately, the problem is on my home computer, so I can't test anything until the evenings (EST).Thanks.

When I have seen this problem, I also notice in Disk Management that the rename drive letter option is greyed out (unavailable). It's happened to me both with a flash drive and also a sdhc card. Strangely, it first seemed that renaming it with diskpart was the solution. At some point in the steps, the drive was randomly being reported as write-protected. I began to research how that is possible, but didn't follow through. Anyway, I then noticed that re-inserting the device more tightly makes it consistently work so the drive-letter options and Ready Boost tab are always there. I actually cut a sheet of paper to the shape of the sdhc card and use that when inserting it. That tiny difference in thickness made all the difference for my card reader. I hate it when people suggest these kinds of solutions. Sorry. I'll try this too tonight, but this happens on any of my USB ports. I may have to reformat the partition and load 7 again. Wouldn't think I'd need to, but this is a pesky little problem.

You can try this:Control Panel>>Troubleshooting>>Hardvare and Sound>>Configure a device:->use this option to diagnose any trouble with devices.If no help/nothing wrong found open event viewer Start>>Search>>eventvwr.msc and find error messages in Application and System section which relate to Ready Boost.Post them here

It will help determine the cause of the issue.In addition, if the above suggestions do not work, try the following steps: Rename in Windows Recovery Environment: =========================== 1. Keep pressing F8 upon restarting and choose Repair your computer in the boot menu. 2. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt. 3. In Command Prompt, type in the following and press ENTER at each command: CD c:\windows\inf ren oem*.inf *.old CD C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore ren infcache.1 *.old 4. Once I switched to x:\windows\inf, it couldn't find any file called oem*.inf for me to remane. However, it did see the infcache.1*old in the x:\Windows\System32|DriverStore, but I didn't proceed with renaming that file since I couldn't complete the previous step

I saw in your movie missing ReadyBoost tab - In my opinion ReadyBoost (I mean service & driver) seems work fine only due to unidentyfied reason ReadyBoost tab is unavailable -I tried in my fix restore it.In my opinion these keys are responsible for ReadyBoost tab in properties.Sorry it didn't help too.

If you have not reinstalled the system, try a repair install first: In-Place upgrade (Repair install) =========== 1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System. 2. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive. 3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: a. Click the Start Button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the start search box and then click OK. Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. b. Click Install now. 4. Vivian Xing - MSFT I've done both a restore and a repair and it didn't work. The only solution was reinstall the Windows 7 OS. However, the Windows Easy Transfer made it quite simple. Once the reload of Win 7 completed, it worked again. Go figure.Thanks.

I just had this very same problem; actually this problem was on the back of the general problem: Readyboost isn't working...it did, now it doesn't. Trying, to no avail, to find a solution online, I put my own technical know-how to work. I attempted formatting and uninstalling device driver software (via Device Manager). I know that this worked before, and with the consistency of flash-based hardware (i.e. thumb drives), I knew that this device should've worked. Period... I'm one of those people...lol Finally, I recalled that I had changed the name of the thumb drive shortly after enabling ReadyBoost. Changing the name back to essentially "Removable Disk" restored ReadyBoost's operations. Go figure. I wouldn't think that an alphanumeric name would interfere with the binaries of Windows 7, but it's something to consider if you are having the same problem as me... Hope this helps!!

I have the same problem of having no Readbyboost under Services. I have a HP 64-bit Windows 7 computer. None of the flash drives I use on this computer have the Readyboost option pop up when I insert it n the USB port. But on other computers the flash drives do show the Readyboost pop up. I am not very tech savvy and a lot of the replies I have read on this post are above my comprehension. So, in general, if I don't have the Readyboost under Services, then how do I get that? Do I need to reinstall Windows 7?

I have the same problem of having no Readbyboost under Services. In Windows 7 the ReadyBoost driver is loaded by the Superfetch (SysMain) service. Yeah, all of the drivers on the systems are also considered services, but they do not show up in the mmc snap-in. I have just found myself in similar situation. Plugged in my USB key in order to configure it for running as a ReadyBoost device and after key initialization I've open its disk properties dialogue. Switched to the ReadyBoost tab where I found following text displayed: This device cannot be used for ReadyBoost. ReadyBoost is not enabled because the service responsible for ReadyBoost (Sysmain) has been turned off on this computer. An administrator can turn the Sysmain service back on. First thing I have tried was certainly the check for the ReadyBoost service via services mmc snap-in, where I have noticed that I cannot find ReadyBoost service there at all. So I tried to check for the service state via command line getting this: C:\>sc query rdyboost SERVICE_NAME: rdyboost TYPE : 1 KERNEL_DRIVER STATE : 4 RUNNING (STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN) WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0) SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0) CHECKPOINT : 0x0 WAIT_HINT : 0x0 So the service is running! trying to check for the service display name: C:\>sc getdisplayname rdyboost [SC] GetServiceDisplayName SUCCESS Name = ReadyBoost Therefore service name matches my original expectations, though it is not visible within the system services for some reason.
