Hi Dave, This issue mostly can be caused by your current account do not have permission to access your shared computer. Please take the following steps to troubleshoot this issue. 1.Enable the guest account on the main computer. 2.Add the guest account to the permissions list on the share folder, and then grant the guest account Read and Execute, Read, and List Folder Contents permissions. 3.Restart the computer to test this issue again. Hope it helps.

Hi Thanks for your reply but unfortunately I am unable to complete the above on Windows XP Home edition. The above can apparently only be completed on Windows XP Pro. Please can you advise how I can change settings for user permissions on XP Home. Thanks Dave

Hi, Thank you for your clarifying. Please enable Guest account on Window XP computer to test this issue again. At same time, please temporarily disable your firewall programs. If you still cannot access the Windows XP folder from Windows Vista, lets use command to change folder permission on Windows XP computer. 1. Open a CMD window. 2. Type the following command and run it. Cacls Drive:\folder name /t /e /c /g guest:f For more information about Cacls: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490872.aspx Then, please test the issue again. Hope it helps.

Hi, Thank you for your latest update. Before moving on, I would like to explain that I did test on my C drive since I do not have D drive on my test machine. J I checked your result message and found the following information: Cacls test /t/e/c/g guest:f Displays or modifies access control lists (ACLs) of files CACLS filename [/T] [/E] [/C] [/G usererm] [/R user [...]] [/P usererm [...]] [/D user [...]] . It means the command is not run properly. After double checking your message, I found the parameters you typed that do not have a valid format for this command. The correct command parameter is: Cacls test /t /e /c /g guest:f You typed command parameter is: Cacls test /t/e/c/g guest:f There should be a space between /t, /e, /c and /g. And the result should be: C:\>Cacls test /t /e /c /g guest:f processed dir: C:\test Could you please vierfy it? Thanks.

Dave: Have you any answer after that? I'm exactlly the same problem you had. Means, my laptop see just the desktop computer, nothing more. But otherwise if I connect it as an remote computer all works well. regards, Alfonso.
October 23rd, 2008 9:22pm

Alfonso, Unfortunately no further help or advice has been received in relation to this problem. I can only assume that when a Vista pc tries to connect to an XP PC problems are experienced with guest account privileges. Like with all new OS Microsoft launch compatibility issues arise which only become evident with customer fault reports. I have tried everything possible with the advice on the internet in relation to this error message and with my Vista being an OEM version Microsoft will not give support unless a substantial fee is paid. Microsoft advise me to contact the manufacturer of my laptop i.e Sony and Sony advise me to contact Microsoft!!! Catch 22

Dear Dave: My Laptop is a LG so there is nothing to dealing the computers. Also, as an administrator, not only a guess, I do not seeing the printer. So, something is not going on with the firewall or other permissions/options. Regards, Alfonso.

Hi Dave,I have exactly the same problem as you have. My Vista (home version) can't access my XP pro SP3 within LAN. This stupid 0x80070005 error is always there whenever I try to browse the XP pro SP3 server. I have tried all the "solutions" posted on the internet without success. One of the reasons I guess is that those "tech expert" couldn't repeat the problem or simply havn't seen it before. In my case, I can access Vista Home from XP without any issue. Also, if you map a network drive from Vista, you can access the shared folder in XP from Vista. However, you just can't browse or explore the XP machine. Weird, isn't it? Give it a try and let me know if we are on the same boat.Regards,Jinguo
