Re-Directed Folders
I have a Windows Small Business Server 2008 with re-directed folders setup in Domain User Policies in which I specify that the Documents folder gets re-directed to \\servername\%username%. Windows Vista machines use this setting to successfully make that folder the default location without any further registry tweaks or intervention on my part. When a user opens an application and open a file, the folder list reflects the correct location and all is right with the world. The Windows 7 Pro machines are a different kettle o' fish. When I check the location for "Documents" it shows the default of c:\users\%username%\documents. When I attempt to move the locationng , as I would with Windows XP machines, I get an error saying that the folder is unavailable due to an indexing problem, blah, blah, blah. I am offered the choice of making these files available via indexing or offline files. The files are set or indexing on the server, though not shared. The user has full permissons and is yet denied. I know that setting these files to "Always available offline" solves the problem as evidenced by users on machines with this setting so configured, but I don't want to do that across-the-board. I don't want to use offline files. So, what's the deal? With Windows Vista this was a no-brainer, and yet in Windows 7 it seems to be a no-go. Far be it from me to sing the praises of Windows Vista, but so far it seems that in this respect Windows 7 is a step backwards, though this is the only such weakness I've found. What's the work-around/answer? Thanks in advance for any pearls of wisdom.

I use a Linux server and I do not redirect the Documents" but I can as my server is set to use authentication. There is the possibility of using 2 or even 3 folder for documents. You can many any of them the default. Look at how the public and private are laid out.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! Hi, May I know the exact error message you received which said “the folder is unavailable due to an indexing problem”? At this time, please try to disable the indexing service in Windows 7 and see how it works. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
