Randomly Slow Booting
I have a problem I have had for a long time since early beta where W7 on one boot will be up and running in 2 minutes, on the next reboot it might take 15 minutes to boot.I have the latest bios's and all the latest driver's for all the hardware in the machine. This machine it a HTPC and it is very frustrating that it sometimes takes 15 minutes to boot up.I have done bootlogging and there is nothing in there that is causing it. I output the bootlog to the screen as it boots and the problem is between when the bootlog ends and the desktop becomes available.I have done a couple of boot traces and have attached them here.http://cid-640469dd1621be30.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Publicthe first boot took 2 minutes, I then rebooted a 2nd time which again took 2 minutes but on the 3rd reboot it took 15 minutes. These happened straight after each other. Can anyone help me please??ThanksShawn

Hi Shawn, the causes it the SMSSInit phase: < interval name =" SMSSInit " startTime =" 14152 " endTime =" 823525 " duration =" 809372 " > This phase takes 809372s, which is extremely slow. The SMSSInit subphase begins when the kernel passes control to the session manager process (Smss.exe). During this subphase, the system initializes the registry, loads and starts the devices and drivers that are not marked BOOT_START, and starts the subsystem processes. SMSSInit ends when control is passed to Winlogon.exe. When I know open the trace, I see that the driver KS.sys is hanging twice. The first time, the ks.sys driver takes 403387s to end. The second time it takes 401883seconds. When I go to the end of the frist ks.sys and start of the second ks.sys, I found out that the driver hcw89.sys is called. From what I see this driver belongs to your Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2200. Are you using the latest drivers? Yes I am using the latest drivers. I have tried in the past all the driver from the ones from Window's update to the latest ones. I am even using later ones then is on there UK web site from the Australian distrubitor.BTW I do have 2 Hauppauge HVR-2200's in the machine which is why it is showing up twice.Looks like I have found a thread on the Hauppauge sitge about the issue so I will continue looking there to fix the problem.ThanksShawn(P.S. I hope that the unit isn't seconds as 403387 is about 4.6 days and it only takes 15 minutes to boot :) )

Hi Guys, I've been researching this very issue as I noticed a significant increase in Windows 7 boot time on my HTPC after installing the drivers for my Hauppauge HVR-2210 (Also using hcw89.sys). I see it happen every boot - even with a SandForce 3 SSD it hangs for about 20 seconds. Could you please fill me in with what you've found or link me to the forum? Regards, Daniel.

I've just installed a Hauppauge HVR-2220. I'm seeing the same 20 second hang during boot. I've tested with both the drivers that came on the CD and the latest drivers from the Hauppauge website (Driver Version 7.9.1.29186). James Miles http://enumeratethis.com

I've just been advised by Hauppauge technical support; "the card loads the firmware during the boot, so it takes longer boot-up time."James Miles http://enumeratethis.com
