Random Freeze (diagnostics)
I have been having the same random mouse freeze that apparently many others have been. This only started for me about 2 weeks ago in a full screen game. Since then I have noticed it while surfing the internet (in both IE and Firefox). The system freeze "stutters" input by stopping all input (mouse and keyboard) for a second or two. Then everything resumes as normal. This might happen 20-30 mins apart or almost back-to-back several times in a row. I have reformatted the hard drive and re-installed to clear the problem but it persists. I have removed all extra hardware from the system and have run the internet directly from the wall instead of though the router. I have opened the Event Viewer and have Process Explorer running while using the computer. After extensive use over several hours, the only common issue that always happens during every 'freeze' is the refreshed log file shows an informational system entry that matches the timestamp of the freeze. These system events are common in that they are services being started/stopped. However, I have not been able to find a specific service as the problem. Exact to the minute of the freeze I have the following log on every occurrence: Information 5/24/2010 11:49:07 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:45:48 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:45:30 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:45:24 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:43:24 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:43:18 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:38:24 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:38:22 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:38:18 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:36:16 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:36:10 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:34:54 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:33:20 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:32:19 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:31:16 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:31:10 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:29:10 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:29:04 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None Information 5/24/2010 11:25:26 PM Service Control Manager 7036 None The problem is in order the informational events are: The Multimedia Class Scheduler service entered the running state. I am running on a quad-processor with 8 gig ram and twin sli-Nvidia 9600 graphic cards and three 1.5 tb hard drives. This system hardware was working without any problems for over two years (over a year on Vistax64, 4 months on Win7Betax64, and then 3 months on Win7x64). I am left considering a possible system update is causing the freeze as a delay when the event log file is being written. Anyone have any other ideas?

Does the keyboard still response (for example, the light turn on/off when you press Caps Lock)? If so, it should be a software confliction issue. You may troubleshoot in Clean Boot Mode in this situation. Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program However, if the keyboard stops respond when the issue occurs, the system may encounter kernel issues. Since Windows system uses separated user mode and kernel mode memory space, stop errors are always caused by kernel portion components, such as a third-party device drivers, backup software or anti-virus services (buggy services). To troubleshoot this kind of kernel crash issue, we need to debug the crashed system dump. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum. Technocrate, I have performed a complete hard drive low-level format and Win7x64 OS reinstall to rule out registry settings as the root cause. Note that I have also re-downloaded all drivers to rule out a corrupted file. Arthur Xie, I verified that the keyboard numlock and mouse light remain on during the freeze. I will still have to check for keyboard capslock response during a mouse freeze when I get back to the system. ****** Suggested fixes (that have not worked for me) Update BIOS (been running lastest version over a year and when it used to work) Update hardware drivers (all newly downloaded) Remove USB hub and plug directly (done) Downgrade USB3 to USB2 (My rig does not have USB3) Swap mouse from usb to ps/2 adapter (just bought one and will test tonight) Test the issue in Safe Mode (will test again to validate if anything now changed worked) System Restore (tried two before formatting system) Downgrade DirectX 11 to DirectX 10 (will do this tonight) Clean Boot" troubleshooting. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us msconfig services - check hide MS services - disable EVERYTHING in both the start up and services tabs RAM - run fewer programs or purchase additional RAM (have 8 gigs of ram and used to work so have enough) Try Registry cleaners / defragmenters (Formated drive) Check the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for USB connection (bypassed UPS and all power surger protectors) Check for failing power supply (used tester to validate) ****** Not the only one with this random error, listing a few of the searched "random mouse freeze" posts Windows 7 Pro 64bit: Intermittent mouse freezing after most recent update http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprohardware/thread/b1647df4-d0e3-4257-aa6a-ce323218c492 Keyboard and mouse freeze randomly http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/1102c64a-f872-4852-b039-b747bc82f83a Mouse freeze http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/c92660fc-bdaa-4f3d-9c71-37282924e6c9 Ramdom freeze with my window 7 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/c0535ba8-a481-42aa-a442-dfb225bd2031 MX Revolution staggering/freezing issue resolved http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Mice-Trackballs/MX-Revolution-staggering-freezing-issue-resolved/m-p/273337#M17936 "Cursor pauses in Windows 7 64 bit intermittently","After researching with Google it appears the Win 7 64 bit has some issues with USB management." Will next try the last post's suggestion of - http://www.tomppaduulis.org/blog/2009/07/windows-7-random-freeze-problem-and-the-fix/ "Fortunately the fix to my problem was rather easy. Annoying to find out yes, but easy. Don’t know what exactly causes it, but apparently on some desktop computers not having the “Full performance”-option selected from power management causes this. At least when I turned it from normal to full, the freezes went away. Strange thing indeed, which I hope gets fixed from the final release." Failing that, I will most likily reformat the system again. If I stop all Windows Updates and not load Office or other applications, I can hope to test patches for the possible rot cause. Again, in this case, the system used to work without errors until about three weeks ago.

Does the issue occur again? Since it started to occur recently, maybe some driver updates cause this issue, you can also try Lask Known Good configuration.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Mr. Xie Some "data" points to consider: 1. On my Dell D620 the issue only occurs when docked with a D/Port or D/Dock and only on USB connected mouse or keyboard. It occured on my Vista x32 Enterprise load last year, and went away when I did an install of Win7x64 Enterprise. When that drive died, I went to a Win7x32 and the issue came and went in conjunction with "patch Tuesday". 2. Other posts seem to support a cause and effect with patches 3. My home system is running Win7x64 and doesn't have the problem. 4. There was a time earlier this year when the problem ONLY occured at work with the mouse and not at home, then it was mouse and keyboard at work and not at home and lately it has been mouse in both locations. At home I have a KVM and a MS Wireless Deskset 5000. So it isn't hardware, but to me this looks like drivers. I will try to do a safe mode boot and still get some work done, I will post what I discover here. Frankly, the posts on the other forums have been fruitless for all concerned.Energy Systems Lab, Texas A&M University

For me this issue has been fixed. There is still USB mouse driver compadibility issue, but I have fixed my problem. I eventually had to roll back and bring current my motherboard bios. IT appears that the older ASUS mother board does not play nice with Windows7 usb drivers. This had not been a problem for me until I installed the Logitect SetPoint drivers which seems to either corrupted or been incompadible with the bios. When I was troubleshooting, the problem existed with any mouse. Now I have eithe of my Logitect mice working but have not installed SetPoint to use the mouse multi-keys. I will have to eventually test this too, but dont have time for now. Mr. Xie, I feel your fustration. I am marking this as a solution for me since my problem seems to have been fixed. However reading several other forums threads, this seems to continue to be a problem fro many users. Unfortunatly it appears to be an unknown catalyst that starts the probelm. For me I made many changes from bios setting to deep analytics and eventually reflashing bios seems to have fixed it. But I really dont know what the final fix was nor the original cause. For me, the issue seems to be in pre-win7 motherboards losing the ability to work with the usb drivers.
