Random BSoD/Freezing in Windows 7
Hi, I've just replaced my HDD and upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit. However, it's been crashing randomly very often and it's irking me. Desktop will stop loading, cursor can still be moved around but unable to hover/click on anything. However, just a couple of seconds later, cursor may or may not enlarge and then everything freezes. http://cid-acb2be081cdf3ea3.office.live.com/self.aspx/Crash%20dumps/112910-14390-01.dmp Please help me out! I really want to know where the problem lies! Specs: MSI K9N2 Diamond nForce 780a SLI SPP AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ DDR2 4GB Radeon HD 4670 Coolermaster PSU 430W

go into the BIOS and you should see the version number. The current BIOS version is 2.8: http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloadfile&dno=13218&type=bios"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Okay, I've downloaded update 2.8. But, how do I update it? No doubt my current version is nowhere near 2.8. I understand that this operation is of utmost delicacy, and I have a friend who has advised against me from updating BIOS on my unstable system. Will I be able to do it in safe mode? As far as I've tried, my system doesn't freeze in safe mode. Please advise. EDIT: I have read extensively about a USB flashing tool from some forum and will proceed to try it when I get my hands on a USB flash drive.

Pleae upgrade your BIOS, SATA driver and hard drive firmware. If it does not work, you may boot in Clean Boot Mode as BSOD can be caused by programs that are running in kernel mode. Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program If the issue persists in Clean Boot Mode you can try to check the driver signature. To do so, in Start Search box enter sigverif.exe. Then click the start button in “File Signature Verification”. In the result list, please pick up *.sys files, rename one of them and then shut down or restart to check if the issue still occurs. If the issue persists, rename another *.sys file listed in the result of driver signature verifying, and check result again. By doing so we can determine which un-singed driver is the root cause. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I'm currently on 10.11 ATI Catalyst which is the latest. I installed the new MSI drivers and have managed to update BIOS. The Memtest86+ included within the BIOS update concluded that my RAM is working well. No new crashes, only same old ones that point to the same bugcheck code 117. Can anyone help?

Yes, I just borrowed and installed a GT220 from my friend after removing my HD4670. Will update after some rigorous testing. I have a question. Do nForce drivers include graphics drivers for onboard graphics? While installing the latest drivers for GT220, the installer mentioned something about uninstalling previous nvidia graphics. It got me thinking if that could have conflicted with my ATI drivers for HD4670.

sorry, I'm a ATI/AMD user. I don't use a nVIDIA card or nForce chipset."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

I have determined that my HD4670 was the culprit. Upon installation of the GT220, there was no longer any stability issues.

Update: I purchased and installed a pre-owned HD4870 and 10.11 Catalyst. Pretty stable in desktop, but crashes like flies in games like Crysis and Mount & Blade: Warband. Has issues with Left 4 Dead 2 as well. I tried uninstalling Catalyst Control Center, didn't help. Uninstalling ATI drivers altogether and using WDDM 1.1 didn't help as well. I switched to the GT220 and it's been very stable in Mount & Blade: Warband and anything it could run. My friend is very sure it's my motherboard's problem after testing my HD4670 on his system. I'll be swapping the HD4870 with his HD5770 and we'll be testing each other's card tomorrow for a stronger confirmation. I'll update again.
December 12th, 2010 10:11am

An idea dawned on me in the morning. It could be a faulty PCI-E slot. A very probable reason the GT220 has been so stable could be that I used the lower PCI-E slot on my motherboard instead of the higher slots for my dual-slot HD4670 and HD4870. I tested my friend's HD5770 on the lower slot today and it's been totally flawless for 4 hours. I'm gonna retrieve my HD4870 tomorrow and try it on the lower slot and see how it goes. I'll update again.

Final verdict's out. I tried HD4870 and HD5770 in all 3 of my PCI-E slots. All gave me a bugcheck code of 116 instead of 117 when I was using HD4670. My friend had no problems using either HD4870 or HD5770. This probably points to a dying motherboard. Two crash dumps with bugcheck code 116 uploaded: http://cid-acb2be081cdf3ea3.office.live.com/self.aspx/Crash%20dumps/121410-15937-01.dmp http://cid-acb2be081cdf3ea3.office.live.com/self.aspx/Crash%20dumps/121410-16406-01.dmp Does anyone have a better idea?
December 13th, 2010 11:25pm

the 116 bugcheck is impossible to debug, the public Debug files don't inlcude any useful data to debug it. if all cards crash, it is maybe your motherboard/PSU."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/
