RSAT for Windows 7 - error viewing group policy settings for software restrictions
When I try to view our default domain policy with Windows 7 (version 1.0 of RSAT for windows 7), it is unable to display details about Software Restriction Policies in the report. When I view the same policy on one of our Windows 2008 Domain Controllers, everything looks fine in the report. We are running a 2003 Functional Forest and Domain level with a few Windows 2008 Domain Controllers. Below is the text of the error:An error has occurred while collecting data for Software Restriction Policies. This error impacts the following settings: Software Restriction PoliciesSoftware Restriction Policies/Security LevelsSoftware Restriction Policies/Additional Rules The following errors apply to all of the above settings: An unknown error occurred while data was gathered for this extension. Details: Unable to cast object of type 'System.String[]' to type 'Microsoft.GroupPolicy.Reporting.Extensions.Registry.UnknownType'.

Hi netwrk, Did you enable RSAT after installing it? After downloading and installing the "msu" package, you'll need to enable the functionality of the RSAT package by opening the "Programs" area of the Windows Control Panel and then selecting Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. In the Windows Features dialog box, expand Remote Server Administration Tools and select the remote management tools that you want to install. Have a look at the link from MS downlaod center as below: Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 Go through the "Installing Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7" part. You will find that we need to enable RSAT after installing it. Regards. Cecilia Zhou

Cecilia, do you understand the installation of RSAT yourself or do you just post 'scripted' answers to questions that you don't understand? If I hadn't enabled RSAT, then I wouldn'tbe able toopen group policy management and get the error that I posted above in the first place.

Something else I noticed. I have an Win XP machine running GPMC and everything display's fine without issue. It is my Win 7 machine running GPMC that gives me the error. Could there be additional ADM's to install?

I am having this same issue with a Server 2008 R2 box that is an RDS Host (Terminal Server). The other 2008 Servers in that TS farm are running the Software restriction policies just fine but the box that was recently upgraded to R2 has this problem and all of them have identical network configurations. Has anyone tried to see if a separate policy needs to be made using Applocker instead of the old software restriction policies?

Hi All I have exactly the same issue Win 7 GPMC reporting the exact same as first post. I have gone as far as deleting and reconstructing the software restriction policy in a new GPO. Locally on the 2003 server with sp2 all looks well but not with Win 7 GPMC. When I add an application from the Win 7 GPMC the 2003 server GPMC then gives the same error.I have found this within the policy under "Extra Registry Settings"will investigate it further.... "Display names for some settings cannot be found. You might be able to resolve this issue by updating the .ADM files used by Group Policy Management."Cheers

Hi, Question to the MSFT guys: Is this a known error? Or should I open a support ticket for that? Cheers, Gunter

Apparently it's a known issue and they don't plan on fixing it: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverGP/thread/eb3646ae-bfc5-43d3-a621-c83afc54d66a Here's a link to a similar problem with Vista SP1. Perhaps this will help with Win7 as well. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverGP/thread/665a0bd9-7ac8-4c79-8115-d4813b52369f Very very frustrating problem. I too am facing this same issue. I've gotten some reports to show using the above Vista SP1 fix, but any new reports I create cannot be viewed.
