RDP connection unstable from Win7 to Win7 over internet using gateway
RDP FROM HOME DESKTOP TO MY WORK DESKTOP BECAME UNSTABLE RECENTLY: I have a Dell XPS8100 at home with Windows 7 Home Premium. My box at work is a Dell Optiplex 780 with Windows 7 Enterprise. I am a desktop support tech in one of the departments at our organization. I have been using RDP from home for several years. Until about a year ago I had to connect to the enterprise LAN using Cisco Anyconnect SSL VPN but about a year ago, the supervisor of our IT group configured a Microsoft gateway so we and our users would not have to use Cisco Anyconnect for RDP connections from home to work machines. I specify the gateway in the Advanced tab of the .rdp file on the home machine. When I launch it and enter my credentials, I am first authenticated on the gateway on the LAN at work. This gets me through the firewall (there is a hole for the gateway). Then RDP connects to the box in my office. I started using this gateway shortly after it was up and it worked fine for maybe six months. But a few months ago I found that when I got into my work box, it would appear to freeze, but it was the RDP connection, not the computer in my office that was freezing. How I know this is explained in the next section. USING TERMINAL SERVER AS GATEWAY FIXES PROBLEM: We also have a Terminal Server on the LAN. If I first RDP to the Terminal Server, then RDP from there to my work box, all is fine. I can work for hours with no freezing. This is how I am working from my desktop computer at home. MY LAPTOP WORKS FINE FROM HOME USING RDP WITH GATEWAY: I recently got a Dell XPS M1210 laptop with Windows 7 Enterprise that one of my coworkers refurbished after getting it from a user whose laptop he replaced. I can use the RDP connection with gateway from that machine to my work box with no problem. I normally connect to the internet at home with the laptop using Wi-Fi, but today I tried disconnecting the Ethernet cable from my desktop computer and connecting to the laptop (with wireless disabled on the laptop) and it worked fine so I don't think it is a wired vs wireless problem. I searched on Google for "latest RDP client for Windows 7" and came up with this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969084 But that is for XP and Vista. I could not find it for Windows 7. If I look at Properties on mstsc.exe on the home desktop, on the details tab it shows version 6.1.7601.17514 with a mod date of 11/20/10. Mstsc.exe is the same version on the laptop. I've tried several combinations of settings on the RDP file at home to no avail, but would be happy to try specific settings.

Can you copy the RDP file from the laptop to your home desktop perhaps? Or compare them at least?MCP Windows Server MCTS .NET

I did try the exact .rdp file from the laptop on the desktop and it did not work. I read the discussion you linked and it looks like that was caused by ESET Nod32. I am not running that. Thanks, Don

Try to disable auto-tuning and see if it resolves the issue. Please refer to: Network connectivity fails when you try to use Windows Vista behind a firewall device http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934430 This article is also applied for Windows 7. I unchecked Printers, Clipboard and Smart Card on the Local Resources tab. That fixed the issue. Thanks, Don
