RDP Crashes everytime while connectiong to Windows 2008 server.
When ever I try to connect to a Windows 2008 box or another Windows 7 machine, my RDP comes back with the "Remote Desktop Connection has Stopped Working" The computer locks up and take a while to display the error message below. I have tried this from 2 different Windows 7 laptops, same thing. I am able to connect to Windows 2003 servers and XP workstation without any issue. Hi, · To troubleshoot the issue, I suggest we perform the following steps. 1. Run Remote Desktop in administrator privilege. ========================= By default, the remote desktop connection runs as a user with the lowest user permissions. By default, a restricted user does not have permission to write registry entries to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Therefore, attempts to rewrite the MSLicensing key may fail. To resolve this issue, we need to run the RDP client software as administrator: a. Click Stat, type: MSTSC in the Start Search bar and then right click on the "MSTSC" in the result list->select "Run as Administrator". Click Continue if it prompts. b. Type the target computer address and then click Connect to test the issue again. NOTE: For the troubleshooting purpose, please temporarily disable Firewall and third party antivirus program when establishing the RDP connection. You can re-enable it once we complete the troubleshooting steps. Can we connect to the target computer now? 2. Please test the issue in Clean Boot. If the issue persists, please go to Event Viewer to check logon and logoff event, see if any error is relevant. · Event Log ======================== 1. Click "Start", input "eventvwr" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter. 2. Right click on "Application" on the left frame, choose "Save Log file As"; in the pop-up window, click to choose the Desktop icon on the left frame, input "app" in the "File name" blank, and then click “Save”. 3. Right click on "System", with the same method, save it as "sys". 4. Locate the two saved log files on the Desktop and send them to us. I was recently having this problem after upgrading a Dell Latitude D820 to Windows 7 (the machine does not support Win 7 according to Dell). I found that after running Windows update on my Win 7 machine, there were a few hardware updates (modem, etc.) which were available to select under the optional updates tab. After selecting the additional "optional" updates which applied to my machine (didn't install the Windows Live updates) and installing them with a reboot afterwords, the problem has disappeared. It should be noted that no matter how many times I rebooted the machine prior to installing the updates, the Remote Desktop continued to crash. Additionally, there were also a host of updates available for my Windows Server 2008R2 machine. I installed those after the problem disappeared and the problem has not returned. From my reading about this issue throughout all of the posts, it seems as though legacy hardware drivers from a host of items (graphics cards, modems, etc.) seems to be causing this problem. As with your situation, when my system was initially having problems connecting to my Win 2K8 R2 server I could log on to the other servers in my domain running Win 2K3. Hopefully this helps. Thanks.
