RDC failure albeit successful file sharing
Hi All,
I would like to ask a question on remote desktop connection.
Screenshot of the problem
I have a desktop computer which I connect directly to my laptop using a network cable, and I have made the
group name of these two computers the same to enable file sharing. This has always been working smoothing.
But recently a problem frequently occurs.
1.
I was still able to use file sharing to access folders and files on the connected PC.
2.
However, remote desktop connection would take more than 1 minute to respond, and would finally prompt me message of connection
failure (see screenshot).
3.
If I ping the PC address, command line will show that “Destination host unreachable”.
By 1 we know that the physical connection should be fine. By comparing 1 and (2, 3) if perhaps suggest that the connection mechanism of “file sharing” and (RDC, ping) are different.
So here are my questions:
1.
How to enable remote desktop connection again?
2.
On the technical side, does file sharing use different protocol than (RDC, ping)?
Thanks,
Bob

I found that the problem was due to an IP change in the desktop computer. After updating the IP in RDC, everything went back normal.
But why does the desktop PC has its own IP changed?
I am fairly weak in network knowledge, but before seeking to answer the above question, one should know at first “how is IP
acquired”. So basically, I would like to ask two questions:
1.
How is the IP address of a local computer (the desktop PC is not connected to Internet, and connect with my laptop only by a network cable)’s IP address acquired? Is it a LAN address?
2.
Why does it change? On the day this IP change I installed and later uninstalled
Kaspersky Antivirus due to incompatibility with some applications, could this be the reason?
Thanks,
Bob
