RC1
you stated that will have to install the rc1 ourselves. My question is we can only do a upgrade to Vista or a clean one. Why can't we upgrade win 7 build 7000. If we do a clean boot will we lose everything thats on the computer now.

There is a blog entry on how to upgrade. If you want to continue reporting your testing results as feedback, you will probablyneed to do a clean install.Delivering a quality upgrade experience:Rating posts helps other users Mark L. Ferguson MS-MVP

You have a week before RC1, so start backing up your personal data in readiness to do a nice clean install.

If you decide to perform a clean install, you can use the Windows Easy Transfer (WET) to migrate your files and settings to the new installation. Please see the following article for the instructions. Step-by-Step: Windows 7 Upgrade and Migration for Beta The reasons that an upgrade from a previous beta build is not supported is described in the following article.Engineering Windows 7 : Delivering a quality upgrade experienceIn this article, there is an unsupported procedure that is described that allows you to upgrade from build 7000, if you are an advanced user. This procedure is not recommended.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Beta Ronnie Vernon MVP

If we do a clean boot will we lose everything thats on the computer now. The simple answer which everyone seems to be dancing around is this. Microsoft is looking for people to test REAL WORLD SITUATIONS - not something that won't ever likely be happening again.Build 7000 will be expiring on August 1st. Let's say, just for the sake of argument Windows 7 goes Gold (is Released to Manufacturing or RTM) in September. It gets released to the general public say, November 2009. As you can see, the 7000 build will be LONG dead and buried by the time they release it. People will likely be upgrading from Vista once Windows 7 is released. They don't really care that much about an upgrade from a build that won't be around down the road. There IS a method for upgrading from build 7000 and it's documented in the blog entries linked to by both Mark and Ronnie. It's not recommended because it can leave some oddball issues that may not occur if you do a straight up installation.

In addition to the answers already given, you will most likely not be able toupgrade from RC to Gold (I can't site the source). Ifdata preservation is your primary concernthen you should probably avoid betas and wait for GA. With that said, the migration wizard is better than ever and I've used it to go from XP to Win 7.
