QuickTime or WindowsMedia Player wrecked desktop
I was trying to troubleshoot a problem with a computer running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (it would not play music using QuickTime). First, I tried to open one of the sample music files with QuickTime, but couldn't find a menu option to play a music file
- only to play movies or go to a specified URL. Since I couldn't check whether sound was working correctly with QuickTime, I went to Windows Media Player and tried to open one of the sample music files provided by Microsoft.
Suddenly all the desktop icons except for a couple of pdf's which the user had stored on the desktop were turned into .lnk files. If I try to click on an icon, WindowsMediaPlayer launches, and the system complains that no installed programs can play
.lnk files. When I try to create new shortcuts for installed programs, the new shortcut turns into a .lnk file also. The installed programs seem to be still working - if I start Windows Explorer using the keyboard shortcut, go to Documents, and click
on an existing file it opens. However, the secretary who uses this PC won't be able to function well (if at all) using this technique.
I tried rebooting, but nothing changed.
What is going on here - and more urgent, how can I get the system back to normal?
Please help!!

IMHO QuickTime has so many problems that I am using RealAlternative instead.
If you really want QuickTime, then the vendors support forum is better platform for solving your problem.
Thanks for understanding
