Questions about Vista Ultimate BitLocker
My goal, within the next three months, is to prove out my Vista Business x64. This requires that I install and use my various products - most notably Nortel Contivity VPN client. Once stablized on the Vista platform, I shall be moving 100% to Windows Vista - - - x64. To do this, I would like to know several things about the approach MS has taken with BitLocker features provided in Ultimate version of Vista: 1) In earlier research, I found where BitLocker sends and stores encryption key data to a primary MS repository. Is this true, and if so is it necessary? (Due to the sensitive nature of what I do, I cannot dissiminate any form of encryption related materials to 3rd parties that might ultimately permit someone from accessing my system.) 2) I understand that a TPM module v2.1 (or later?) is required to utilize the BitLocker features. My system shall be upgraded to include these features. What is unclear, is the type of performance hit and system hardware impact the addition of this shall have. Specifically: power consumption, heat generation, interference with other non-MS software (IBM, HP, etc.). If there is any information specific to this, please let me know. 3) My system contains multiple spindles, totalling 480GB. Disk 0: Windows XP Pro & Windows Vista Business x64; Disk 1 & 2 are spanned dynamic disks. The question, can I use BitLocker to encrypt my dynamic disk after completing the lock down for my Vista partition? 4) Once BitLocker is installed and functional, does it, by default, eliminate my Dual-Boot configuration, or can it remain for a period of time (until I am satisfied that the system is sufficiently stable to work effectivly from the single platform?) 5) Does BitLocker provide pro-active participation in reducing or eliminating the system exposure to various threats that are directed at extracting and transmitting data from the drive(s)? 6) Are there any known conflicts/impact is using the BitLocker features with iPass/Nortecl products (I know this question is just a freebe - since this is not the correct forum for it - but any knowledge sharing is greatly appreciated.)? For those that attempt to review and answer, some or all of, the questions above, I am indebted to you. I certainly appreciate the time and consideration given by you for these - to me - important questions. - Jim
