Question on File virtualization, UAC & notepad
I'm experimenting with Win7 file virtualization and UAC and I don't understand something. If I use metapad to edit a file in %program files% as a normal, non-elevated user, metapad will allow me to save the file and as expected the changes are saved to my %Appdata%\local\VirtualStore. Not to program files. This jives with what the Windows Resource kit says in the How It Works section on page 72. That is "the file system intercepts access-denied errors before they are returned to the application. if the file locaition is in a place configured to virtualize data, a new file path is generated without the applicaiton knowing this has occured. Now, if I attempt the same operation with Notepad, I am prompted to save the file elsewhere. I'm curious as to why Notepad doesn't save the file automatically in the VirtualStore. It would appear that this is inconsistent behavior. My Guess: Notepad knows a non-admin is not allowed to write to a protected location and prompts for a different location. Thanks \\Greg
