Question about windows search.
I just went to my pictures library and 1)did a search on "dimensions:1920x1200". Only a few items showed up. I know i have much more images that are 1920x1200 in the pictures library than what showed up in search. So i searched all pictures by typing "*" in the pictures library search box, and enabled a column called "dimensions". Turns out that most pictures do not have the dimensions metadata specified. This is why it didn't show up in my original search. I don't understand why a picture would be missing the dimensions attribute since it can be calculated from the file. On the other hand, if I manually navigate to a folder full of images, and then enable the dimensions column, all the dimension data for each image DO show up correctly and I am able to filter by dimension in the search box. But this is not good enough. I need to be able to search all of my pictures library (and all other indexed locations) and filter by dimensions. Even if the files are in sub-folders or sub-sub folders. Am I missing something? Is there anyway to re-enable the STACK BY feature? It was the best feature of Vista

oCpmture - I tried duplicating this issue - unsuccessfully. I don't have any pics that are exactly 1900x1200, so I substituted a resolution that I do have - 3264x2448. My search immediately popped up those pictures I have on here that DO match that resolution. All of the pictures showed up in the Details view with their size noted in the Dimensions column when I activated it. All of the pictures in question have been modified on this box by Windows 7 Beta (build 7000). There have been some reports that pictures that had not been modified weren't read into the system. Are the pictures standard JPGs or are they in another format? You can make a request to have the Stack By feature put back in by posting to the Have Comments about the Windows 7 RC (part 2) thread. Things posted there are forwarded directly to the developers regularly.

are you searching just one folder, or a whole hierarchy of subfolders as well? For me, the dimensions only show up consistently if you are within the immediate parent folder of those images that you're searching. This is what i'm talking about http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2018/capturen.png I listed all files in the pictures libraries. Most pictures are within subfolders. As you can see, most of them have an unspecified dimension. However, if i right click on one of them to open file location, then the dimensions are listed. These images are mostly downloaded from the web or taken by some cameras, but they are standard jpeg.

Hm, it seems like I do need to modify it. Where is the report? Is there anyway to mass "modify" them automatically so the dimensions show up in search? Also, do you know why it is necessary that a file has to be "modified" ? It's just metadata stored in the file itself..right?

oCpmture - Actually, I've got a mix. Many are downloads of pictures from the web, some are pics from a camera and the rest are screen caps I clipped from various programs to show someone a bug. Andyes, I am searching multiple folders. I've got the one "My Pictures" entry, one other folder on the C:\ drive and another one in E:\. It sounds like Windows has to be told to read the pic before it recognizes it. I would imagine that if you were to select ALL of the pics and right-click on the lot, that would force Windows to refresh it's metadata stores and populate that information for you.
