Put Win8 computer to sleep from RDP

Hello,

Sometimes I control my Win8 box from RDP and when I have finished, I want to put the computer to sleep. I have seen no way to do it : I can only log off. The only workaround I saw was to create a console application (.NET) that calls the api to puts the computer to sleep (the rundLL32 method didn't work as the computer was going to hybernate mode). Is there another way to do it without creating a program?

Thank you

Marc

Hi,

Have you set sleep function on Windows 8? If so, Windows 8 will go to sleep after a period of inactivity (when you close your remote session).

Hello,

Yes, the sleep is configured correctly and is working when I work  directly on the computer (in the shut down menu there is an option sleep).

You are also correct, the computer goes into sleep after a period of inactivity (30 minutes at the moment), but when I have finished with the computer, I want to put it to sleep immediately. There is no reason to let the computer on during (for example 30 minutes) when I have finished working with it. It should go to sleep immediately (so an option to put the computer to sleep next to the one to log off is great.

Thank you

Marc

I think it's a standard behaviour. You need Windows Server to be able to use shutdown/restart/sleep.

Can anyone confirm this?

Hello,

In Windows 7 it was working so I believed it was a mistake from me.

I will continue to use my small program to put the computer to sleep.

Which edition of Windows 7 were you using?

Hello,

It was the Ultimate x64 (every update applied).

I had either to go to the security scrren (ctrl + ald + delete normally and in TS it was crtl + end + delete) and in the options there was disconnect (like in Win8) but also sleep and shutdown.

Ctrl + Alt + End no longer works in Window 8. The combination "Alt + F4" does work.

Click a blank spot on the Desktop and press Alt+F4. You'll get the old "power" menu.

brzeszkiewics - that's fantastic! I've heard the usual response of "create a shortcut on the desktop and enter the command XYZ in the properties->whatever menu..." for years. This is the most simple solution I've seen yet!
