Dear all, Just as what you guys feel, I've keep searching for a solution of this problem. Some people think that it is a bug, but I proved, it's not ture. Motivated by my curiosity and hacker sprits, I figured out that the problem is caused by a failed IPv6 stack problem, which repeatly shown in my event log. To address this problem, I tried to disable IPv6, disable new dynamic stack, disable firewalls, enable static IP and so on. But they all failed. To my surprise, the solution is extremely simple. First, disable the satic IP and ICS (if you have set previously). Second, go to Control panel > Network and Internet > Networkand Sharing center > Managing network connections (on the right corner)> Select all connections > right click on one of the connection > click "Network bridging" Third, when finished,right click on the icon of Network Bridge > select "properties" >unlock the UAC >remove the tick of your internet connection in the upper box > click "OK" Forth, right click the icon of your internet connection > select "properties" >unlock the UAC > go to the "sharing" page, tick both check box. > click "OK" Now, wait for the Windows Vista to recongnize the new network setting. Wait a minute and check if both computer can get access to interent. If the tricks failed to work, just restart both of PC. Lastly, I would like to say sorry to all of you as I am not a native in English. There may be many grammar and spelling mistakes. Please correct me.

I also recently bought a new computer with vista and i have spent probably 50+ hours trying to solve this problem... Your solution worked PERFECTLY. I did have to restart once I completed your steps, then about 1-2 minutes after restart it WORKED! Thanks a million man your a genious..

seuren83, The UAC is the User Account Control. It was a little confusing the way he said it but you don't unlock (disable) it from the properties window, he was trying to say you need to disable it between the time you open the properties window and before you check/uncheck any boxes. I noticed, when i turned UAC on again, my internet connection doesnt work anymore. when i turn UAC off again, it works again. My question is therefore:Is it safe tokeep the UAC turned off ?

My UAC is currently active, and my network still works with this method. I only needed to turn it off temporarily to create the connection, and havn't had to bother with it again.

1st, your english is at least ok 2nd, any idea how to share a pppoe Internetconnection with other types? Vista does not allow bridging between a broadband connection and lans or others. Thanks

Huge THANK YOU VERY MUCH to Posts7 for the excellent answer to our problem setting up a network with Vista as the main computer and Windows XP on the other(s). Now how strange is it that this forum entry was dated May 2007, and more than a year later it is not part of the answer on Microsoft Support? For msdnMDY, read the original post from Posts7 again, and even tho the English needs your understanding, the one thing that it illustrates is that Vista allows BRIDGING.....but only when you turn off the UAC as he instructs. Click on HELP & SUPPORT, type in UAC, and the first item is how to turn it on and off! My network is now bridged, and I am running from a broadband connection via modem to one network card, and the other one links the rest of the network thru the bridge! No problem remembering to turn UAC on again after setting up the bridged network, because Vista reminds you thru the Security Center. Happy networking!

Hi! I am the original writer of this post. I will try to rephrase a bit the original post. The main problem involved is that I was using a Chinese version of Windows Vista, and I had to translate all the UI elements into English, withoutknowingthe exact wording used in the English UI. SO SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH. But anyway, please keep giving comments on my English level. I REALLY NEED TO KNOW THAT. If you found this post useful, pleasegive comments on my English level, my wakeness and so on. Regarding the post from msdnMDY, I suggest you to install the latest SP1 patch and try once again. If this fails to work, for the worst case scenario, you may need a third-party workaround solution. Lastly, I would say turning off UAC can be dangerous. UAC is a new feature in Vista and it protected me from a MSN virus. Without UAC, I probably couldn't help you guys to solve problems as my computer would have already been infected.

I did this and it worked 'thankyou' although when my vista automatically downloaded service pack one the connection was lost again. i tried re-doing everything but to no avail please please help i'm at my wit's end!

For purple_veedub's case: I think, perhaps, the simplest way is to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 manually. For geerdude's case, I don't think the method mentioned in this post is useful.

WOW!!! Thanks a384, you have finally saved my from going off my head, i have been trying to network my vista machine with wireless internet to my older machine with xp so that i can share files and the internet. I have been clicking on settings galore for the past 5 days now over christmas time to try and sort this out. I got to the point where i could share the files, on the xp machine i could view the vista files, but on the vista machine i could only view xp files if i wasnt connected to the internet, other wise a username and password box appeared, i read on a webpage that the usernameand password would be the same as my login details for the vista pc, but it wasnt.So for everyone else having this problem, it really is as simple as it is described, i cannot thank a384 enough. I would also like to thank the bill gates team for making things like this so difficult for users who aren't so technically minded in networking.

I am posting a very simple way to connect XP and Vista through ICS.. Since I myself is using it ... i got it correct after numerous no. of times..... 1. Make both the machine is same Group. 2. Connect the XP machine with the Internet by ( Dial-up/Broadband). 3. Connect XP machine with Vista machine through the cable used in LAN network. 4. Go to Start->Connect to -> Show all connection. 5. Right click on ( Dial-up/Broadband) connection which ever you want to share, click on properties. 6. Go to Advance tab , click on 1st option in ICS ( Internet Connection Sharing). 7. Select the LAN connection which is established between XP machine & Vista machine. 8. Click ok . some text-box will pop up , click ok on that. 9. A new IP is assigned to your LAN connection which was established between XP machine & Vista machine. 10. All things are done now... Internet will start working on both machines.

So its two years later from this original post...... it worked..... YOU ARE DEMI-GOD MAN! I spent 4 hours trying all this stupid stuff on google and xbox.com.... idk how this is the ONLY person that knows his stuff....... i heart u! (In a straight way of course.)

This doesn't seem to work with a dialup connection. I connect my cell phone that has internet to my desktop via a USB cable and use it as a modem, albeit a very fast one. Bridging doesn't seem to want to work with a dialup and I 'm trying to share the internet from the cell phone that's connected to my desktop to my netbook via a wifi stick that's on the desktop too. Any suggestions? I use Windows 7 ultimate Thanks

hi all, I am new in Windows Vista Home Premium and I am working with it now. I try to share my Internet Connection with my other computer running on Windows XP SP3,as the client, wirelessly but it didnt work at all. I can create the ad-hoc computer to computer connection but I can't acces the Internet from the client computer. I tried to solve this problem as you suggested, but I cant find this thing "Managing Network Connections" Where is the location? or it should be "Manage Network Connection" but in Manage Network Connection I can't find such thing called as Network Bridging You said it is on the right corner of Network and Sharing Center but I only find Search or Help button. If I try to make a Bridge Connection then an error message occured which stated that Bridge Connection is allowed only between 2 LAN connection. Could you give me suggestion regarding this. Thank you in advance

Thank you for your post, I got this problem but I found that you said a keyword in your post "IP stack" I think instead of making the the Nework Bridging you can reset the IP stack using the netsh command it is very simple and require a restart to your computer and the problem is solved. I tried your solution and like magic it works, but I make some searching and find this KB from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 This solution is faster, I'd recommend if someone read your solution tried what I found before appling the solution to find out if it work correctly or not.
