Programs crash when switching windows

Hi, I have had this problem for a while now (about a month after I installed Windows 8.1 on my fresh new computer).

The issue is when I switch windows (the odds are much greater if I minimise or use the show desktop button in the bottom right), the program may not respond, and require to be forcefully closed in task manager (or spamming the X button) to close, then reopened.

This is not normal behaviour and is starting to get onto my nerves since I constantly have to restart my browser when switching between my IDE and it.

Just recently it has started closing a particular background program too (Logitech Gaming Software) which is why I am now contacting support to resolve this issue.

This is my step(s) to reproduce the issue.

I suspect this may have something to do with using an SSD and having a harddrive with my programs on. I modified the %programfiles% system variable and installed all new programs into that location.

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:

Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post * If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do Press Win+"R" and input regedit
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels. Delete "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic"

This is my event log. As you can see LCore and Chrome are on E-drive which is my secondary harddrive. C-drive still contains Windows.

I am comfortable editing the registry. If I were to corrupt the OS I can just reinstall it.

Edit: I installed Windows 8.1, I didnt upgrade from Windows 8

PL

The thing that may be causing the crash when changing windows is the nVidia streaming service.   It seems to appear around the cluster of Chrome an Lcore.  Another thing of note is thermald is also crashing around the same time.

I would remove the current nVidia software and only install the newest video driver (and not the rest of their software)  I would also try re-installing Chrome or try another browser.

As to why Thermald is running in/on windows I have no idea but Thermal console seems to be launching it and bot need to  be re-installed (or removed)

Thermald is a GIGABYTE motherboard feature that controls the fans. Thank-you for pointing out it crashed as my CPU reported itsself -128C when it crashed.

I will remove the NVidia software and attempt to crash Chrome again.

Will post an update ASAP

Edit: Uninstalled NVidia GeForce Experience and rebooted. Still having this issue

Hi,

App crash issue may take some time for finding a possible cause. Generally we will recommend to test with a Clean Boot:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135?wa=wsignin1.0

In Clean Boot, all third party startups and services will be disabled - in this situation please check if same issue still exists.

If not, enable a part of startups at a time (and then services)  to see if we can narrow down the cause.

I assume it should be caused by third party apps/services but if issue persists in Clean Boot, it could be a driver or system build-in services/apps issue.

Performed a clean boot and still having the issue. The only program that was running at the time was AVG as i could not disable it.

The same issue in Event Viewer is happening:

The program chrome.exe version 41.0.2272.101 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

 Faulting package-relative application ID:

I will try to uninstall AVG and perform the test again.

Edit: Done exactly so, and still the problem.

Hi,

Please try a Diagnostic Mode - Open MSCONFIG, select Diagnostic Mode and click OK.

In this mode only basic drivers and services are load. You may not able to connect internet but still please test if same issue persists.

In the meantime you may start getting all drivers for your current computer and reinstall them incase one of them causes the issue.

In addition, it is still recommended not to change the value of %programfiles% - Generally it is OK but for existing applications they will still in the old location and for specific software which is not using the variable, it may fail to get the information it needs.

You can manually change the installation location of most applications to SSD instead of changing the variable.

Thank-you, is there a way to get a more specific error log for why Chrome or LCore crashes? Your response on invalid file pointers may be the cause. As a Java developer, stack traces are important for diagnosing an issue.

Sorry for the long delay,

Using Diagnostic mode, the issue still persists, whereas using Safe Mode, there is no problem.

In safe mode it is not using the graphics card driver (the resolution is low)

I will now uninstall the graphics card driver, reboot, and install the windows-update driver.

Edit: Have uninstalled graphics card driver and now am unable to crash chrome. I will now contact nvidia support for assistance. Thank-you for your help
