Greg - What Mr Seven has suggested is exactly spot on correct - except for one thing. If you're playing around with one of the newer builds that were recently made available on various shady sites - you're out of luck. Microsoft changed the routine that checks keys. The Beta and RC keys will no longer work for newer builds. Be sure you're using build 7100 - the only official release from Microsoft and that you've downloaded it from the official site.

The Beta and RC keys will no longer work for newer builds. Minus verifiable quotation, that statement is FUD.Had I not already been deleted twice for mentioning it, I would not be so blunt now. C'mon, let'shavefacts on this TechNet site.

The reason BETA and RCkeysdon't work in the newer builds is becousenewer buildsnow have SPP code for theRTM licensing structure designed for unique and regulated product keys.

I see this reference to SPP in this article New technology to protect Windows Vista and other products dating back to 2006.So, what's new in these past few weeks?

As opposed to the SPP code implemented for the beta and rc.

C'mon, let'shavefacts on this TechNet site. egads - Ok.. How about a couple of posts right here in this forum from guys who downloaded some fairly recent builds only to find their product keys are kaput..? How about this one hereentitled "Build 7264 Invalid Product Key" or this one from someone known as BelugaWhale found hereentitled "My Windows 7 beta key stopped working :(" in which he says "After installing Windows 7 RC 7264 my windows 7 beta product key have stopped working."There may be others - these two I found with a minimal bit of searching. Btw.. Where's the Fear, Uncertainty or Doubt in my post? Somewhere along the line, you know that Microsoft would have to make it so the beta keys won't work - and that real keys would be needed. And that they would likely need to test that system as well. It would, no doubt, be one of the last things added/changed in the OS - close to RTM release. I suppose it could be a coincidence - but that still doesn't constitute FUD.

The point Wolfie made about later builds not accepting evaluation keys is valid becouse there are many subscribers who truly believe a leaked build is an official public release simply because they are misinformed and will attempt to activate these builds with the readily availible evaluation keys.
