Problems with win 7 on a Server 2000 network.
Hello... I run a smallish network for a small non-profit. We have hung back and used XP for a while, but I am getting ready to use Windows 7 on our network. We are still using a Windows 2000 domain and will be probably for another year or two. I am not having any problems similar to the ones listed below on my XP machines. I only run one Vista machine but it doesn't appear to be effected either. The problems listed below happen with a brand new clean install of Win7. I am not really having any problems with Windows 7 as far as I can tell. The problem occurs when I get Windows 7 professional associated with our domain and a log in. I am not using any roaming profiles, however it appears nothing will save locally. Anything that would normally appear in a user's directory, like "my files" and program settings and desktop settings disappear at log off. So I basically get a new default profile every time a log in. Anything I put on the desktop or in "documents" or anywhere else goes away at log out. I created a test user on the Windows 2000 domain and it does not have this problem, but any other user I log into the Windows 7 machine does the same thing, so it has something to do with how accounts are set up apparently. Working as a Domain admin isn't my primary job here, so I don't exactly know every trick there is with this, however the testing that I did do doesn't seem to indicate that login scripts are part of the problem. I expect there are policy setting that isn't playing right with Windows 7. Thanks in advance for any guidance for what I can check. Thanks... Dave LeFevre

I think I came to the forum too soon! It looks like I might actually have gotten this one figured out on my own. It appears the users are in a permissions group that Win 7 doesn't like. I think preening away extra groups the users don't need will solve the problem. I haven't figured out what group exactly it doesn't like yet, however.
