Problems with upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 15 that came with Windows 8.  Just after I bought it last year, I upgraded to Windows 8.1 with no difficulty.  Last week, it started crashing w/BSOD and either "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" or "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR."  This was likely due to malware, but I couldn't get a virus scan to complete before it crashed again.  So last night, I performed a full factory reset, which thoroughly scrubbed the hard drive and reinstalled the original OS, Windows 8.  Since then, the system has stopped crashing.  I ran a diagnostic on the hard disk and other hardware (Shift+F12 at startup), and it came up clean. I scanned for viruses using Microsoft Safety Scan, and none were detected.  I downloaded all the updates, including KB2917499, which was necessary for the Windows 8.1 upgrade to appear in the Store.  But when I tried to upgrade, I got an error message within about a minute saying "Something happened and your installation couldn't be completed."  In the event log, I found this error message repeated over and over again:

Log Name:      System

What could be causing this? And is this the reason my upgrade won't go through? I hope you can help me!

Check this blog and follow the steps mentioned, let us know if it works:

Something happened and the install of Windows 8.1 can't be completed. (And now you're annoyed)

Best regards
