Problems with permissions/security setting XP Home Edition- cannot download any software!
I have Norton 360 on my computer. OS is XP Home Edition. My computer running very slow in normal mode (not in safe mode though) I chatted for 4 hrs with Norton Tech support... trying to allow remote access, which could not happen because the piece of software that needs to be downloaded was blocked and I got a pop-up box saying that the security settings do not allow downloading this software. Then we tried to download Norton360 to reinstall it, and I got the same message.Since Explorer crashes constantly, and I am very furstrated with it, I decided to try the same downloads from Firefox. The software programs did download but when trying to run them, I got a message syaing that I did not have permission to run them. What should I do? I am NOT a computer guru- in fact I am computer disabled.... please help me.

Hi IG18912, o Provide us the exact error message you are receiving when trying to download from internet.o What error message do you receive when explorer crashes?o Does the explorer crash when working with particular application?o What is the service pack installed on your computer?o What is the make and model number of the computer? As the issue does not persists in safe mode, check the behavior by booting the computer in clean boot state from safe mode and check the results. You may refer the below link on how to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353If the issue does not persist you may continue with step 2 from the above link.Make sure you reset the computer to normal mode after the troubleshooting completes. Samhrutha, Thank you for your response. When I try to download a program from the Internet, the error message depends on whether I use Explorer or Firefox. With Explorer, the error message is something like "your security settings do not allow you to download this program", the only option is to click on OK, and that's the end- cannot donwload. When I try from Firefox, the program actually downloads, but whe I try to run it, I get a message saying that the program cannot be launched because maybe I do not have permission to run it. I cannot use my computer because the tech at Norton had me uninstall Norton, which he said also was problematic, and since I cannot reinstall it, I cannot use my computer. When Explorer crashes, I do not get any error message beyond "Explorer not responding", everything freezes, and many times I just have to unplug my computer. Also when I press CTRL/ALT/DEL I cannot get the task manager, and i get the message that the administrator does not allow the task manager to open.WHat do you mean exactly by "does Explorer crash when working with particular applications?", do you mean when Explorer is open concommittently to other applications? Usually other applications are MS Office 2007 (Outlook and word most often). I have nto noticed it crash more or less frequently with such or such website. The Service pack installed is 3 (SP3)- what is that exactly anyway?Make and Model number of my computer: it is a DELL Inspiron 3000. I bought it new from Dell in 2004 or 5, pretty sure it was 2005. I have 1GB of RAM, and am planning to increase it to 2GB. OK, I will follow your instructions regarding Clean Boot. When you say "check the result", do you mean "try to download Norton?" I am kind of nervous to be on the Internet from a computer that is not protected....Please let me know if the test in clean boot is to download a program. Thank you so much.

HI Samhrutha, I followed your instructions-I hope- and configured windows as explained in the link that you provided. I then tried to download the norton program from the Internet, but again , got the exact same message: "Security Alert: Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded". Furthermore, when I press CTRL/ALT/DEL once to try to open the task manager I get the message: Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator". What should I do now? Thank you in advance.
