Problems with Windows 7 VPN Clients
I have some problems to make a VPN connection from Windows 7 Clients to VPN Server with ISA 2006. My Windows XP, IPHONE's and another kind of VPN clients make a right VPN connection, but Windows 7 doesn't work. I tried with both protocols (PPTP &
L2TP) but doesn't work.
Our infrastructure have this specifications:
Domain
.- Two DC both with W2K8 Server SP2, update with all fixes.
ISA Server
.- Windows 2003 R2 SP2, update with all fixes.
.- ISA Server 2006 standar SP2, update with all fixes.
Clients:
.- 45 Desktop Windows XP SP3
.- 23 Desktop Windows 7 Pro SP2
.- 15 Laptop Windows XP SP3, those computers work fine like VPN Clients
.- 6 IPHONE IOS 5.1, those cellphone work fine like VPN Clients.
.- 5 Windows Mobile 6.5 Phones, those cellphone work fine like VPN Clients.
.- 6 Laptop Windows 7 Pro SP2, those computers doesn't work like VPN Clients
When I tray to connect Windows VPN Cliente with L2TP protocol display Error 789 and Error 691 with PPTP protocol.

Hi,
To make issue clearly, please let us know the following:
1. What VPN Client do you use, the built-in one or third-party ones?
2. Was there any error message when the connection failed?
3. Please check if there is more detailed error information in Event Viewer.
Firstly, I suggest manually restarting the following services in the clients and see how it works:
IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules
IPsec Policy Agent
Remote Access Connection Manager
Meanwhile, please check the issue referring to:
Troubleshooting common VPN related errors
http://blogs.technet.com/b/rrasblog/archive/2009/08/12/troubleshooting-common-vpn-related-errors.aspx
Also, based on my research, please try to edit the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\ReservedPorts in your ISA Server. Add 1723-1723 to reserve the port needed for PPTP and see how it works.
Note: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For
more information about how to back up and restore the registry, please refer to
How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.
In addition, based on my knowledge, the issue may more related to your VPN Server than the clients. Therefore, it is also recommended to post the thread in
Microsoft Forefront Forums and
Windows Server Forums.
For more information, please refer to
Virtual Private Networks.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jeremy
Thanks for your message:
1. What VPN Client do you use, the built-in one or third-party ones?, We use Built-in (Windows XP & Windows 7)
2. Was there any error message when the connection failed?,
Display a message with Error 691 "The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access server." This error
only ocurr when I Tray connect from Windows 7, in fact when I tray from Windows XP the connection is succesfull.
