Problems with Vista Ultimate and XP using a shared folder.
Currently we are running a domain at work. I have 4 Vista Ultimate laptops (users A-D)successfully accessing a shared folder on an XP machine which we shall call "\Data". The XP machine has permissions and security set to allow full access to a number of users"A,B,C,D,E & F". Everything works fine for users A-D and the folder is readable and writable as would be expected. Recently we bought identical laptops (users E & F) and they cannot access this shared folder or any shared folder on the domain with the exception of our 2003 server used for Exchange and important file storage. When they try they are presented with a login popup to allow access. This is where the problem lies. I have looked around and even edited the setting from "Send NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM -- use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated" when running secpol.msc. Laptops A-D had this changed. All other XP machines around the place have no problems either. Additionally I also notice this problem persistently happens when we are logged in remotely via VPN through a Sonicwall SSL VPN device.

Hi, Hope the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article can help you. When you try to access a local resource over a VPN connection, you are always prompted for authentication in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948067 Thanks.

Thanks for the info on the VPN side, but that doesn't really address the initial reason why I can't get to a shared folder within my office environment for two out of about 10 PCs.

Hi, Could you please confirm the following points? Thank you for your cooperation. 1. Does the issue occur when accessing share folder by IP address? Click Start, type \\<IP>\<SHARED FOLDER NAME> in the Start Search box, and press Enter. 2. Ensure the NetBIOS over TCP/IP was disabled on the server's LAN connection. If the issue still persists, please capture a screenshot on Windows Vista when you receive the login popup message. To do this, 1. Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2. Click "Start", type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit", click "Paste". Then click the "File" menu, and select "Save". 4. The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5. Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click "Desktop" on the left pane and then click "Save". 6. Upload the screenshot to a photo sharing site, such as www.flickr.com. 7. Copy the link of screenshot and post it on the forum. Thank you for your cooperation.

To answer your questions: 1. Yes even when I type \\192.168.100.139 (which is the IP of the PC in question) I still get the authentication request as per the pictures attached. 2. NetBios is currently set to default which states it is controlled by DHCP which is the case in this instance. Disabling NetBIOS makes no difference. We have this working on 4 Vista machines but 2 Vista machines have this problem. They are exactly the same hardware wise (Dell Latitude D830) and all of them are running Vista Ultimate SP1. They are also regularly updated and patched. Hi, Try to do follow these steps: 1. Locate the .pbk file that contains the entry that you dial. To do so, click Start, type *.pbk in the Research Bar, and then press Enter. 2. Open the file in Notepad. 3. Locate the following entry: UseRasCredentials=1 4. Modify the entry to the following: UseRasCredentials=0 5. On the File menu, click Save, and the click Exit. Then, re-connect VPN to test the issue. Hope it helps.

Sorry I don't understand what this has to do with the inter-office sharing as per my last post......

Hi, Sorry for my previous post. Regarding the issue in inter-office, I suggest enabling Netmon on the computer to capture the network packets. 1) Download NetMon3.2 from the following website and install it on the computerhttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f4db40af-1e08-4a21-a26b-ec2f4dc4190d&DisplayLang=en 2) Log onto the machines, right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.2.3) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.2 window, click Create a new capture tab 4) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.5) After that, press F10 to start NetMon. 6) Try to re-produce the problem on the computer. 7) Go back to the NetMon window and press F11 to stop the NetMon. 8) Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file and upload them to the following space: https://sftus.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=3c18f92a-55ce-4488-b09c-211e7fde5839 Password: wZu3yDQPqpK]u]n In addition, please understand that analyze/troubleshoot this kind of issue may be time consuming. If it is urgent, Id like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service for instant assistance. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the website listed below:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS Thank you for your cooperation. Hope it helps.

Robinson, I had already taken some Wireshark traces and then I got things to work with authentication (I tried it out of frustrations). What happens is when you get the pop-up requesting username and password if I type in my domain login username and password I get access to the share drive. It looks like the PC I am working from in not authenticating properly (though it is definately part of the domain). The remote share machine then challenges me coming in and makes me authenticate with the domain. Once I have done it once all seems OK. I still don't understand why it is happening though.
