Problems with Scheduled Tasks
I'm having serious issues with the Task Scheduler. When I open up the Task Scheduler, I get a message that says The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh. If I click Refresh it just keeps showing me the same message. I'm also missing all of the standard windows scheduled tasks in the list. It also tells me when I click Display All Running Tasks the following message Task Scheduler Service is not available. Verify that the service is running. The task appears to be running just fine. I've tried restarting the service by opening windows powershell as administrator and running net stop "Task Scheduler" but I get an Access Denied error 5. What is going on with Task Scheduler? How can I resolve these problems? Is there anyway to install the base set of Windows Scheduled Tasks without reinstalling windows?

Hi gitter, Since Windows Vista, the Task Scheduler service is not allowed to be disabled. Therefore, we cannot manually change the start type for this service. Regarding this issue, it is possible the {0} task is damaged. Let's find it in the registry key to check the result. 1. Click Start, type REGEDIT (without the quote) into Search bar, right click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 2. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree]. 3. Right click Tree node in the left pane, click Export, select Desktop in the Save in box and type Backup (without the quote) in File Name, then click Save. Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named as Backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file. Once we have completed the troubleshooting and the issue has been resolved we may delete that file. 4. Press Ctrl+F combine key to search {0} in the registry key. 5. If there is any key found under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree], please delete it. However, if the issue persists, try accessing Clean Boot. If the issue disappears in Clean Boot. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue. You also can test the issue in a new user account and check the event log by the steps below: Check Event Log ===== 1. Please go to Start, type Event Viewer. 2. Expand Event Viewer (Local) -> Applications and Services Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows -> TaskScheduler -> Operational. 3. Please see if there is any error listed. In addition, please help to collect the System Information for further research: System Information ===== 1. Press Start, type in msinfo32 in the Start Search bar and then press Enter. 2. Choose Save from the File menu and save it as an NFO file. 3. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder". 4. Please upload the System Information to your SkyDrive at www.skydrive.live.com and let me know the link. Thanks, Linda

Apparently I already deleted my TaskCache/Tree Key. It is missing from the registry. My .nfo file is stored on SkyDrive at http://cid-112059ead6004161.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/mycomputer.nfo I have several errors in my error viewer which I posted here and also uploaded to the SkyDrive in the same folder. Hi gitter, After checking the System Information you provided, the Task Scheduler service is running properly. If the issue did not occur before, please try using System Restore to restore the system to the date before the issue occurred. However, if the issue persists, please go to View -> check Show hidden Tasks to ensure all the tasks are show. After that, please check if task {0} is listed. In addition, does the issue occur in Clean Boot mode? According to the System Information, there are still some third party software running at the background. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue. However, if the issue still exists, you may have to perform in-place upgrade of Windows 7 to check the result. Regards, Linda

I have not tried Clean Boot yet, but that will be my next step. A System Restore won't help me since this problem began when I ran the Windows 7 x64 install on my Vista box.

There I see a clue: Windows 7 x64. Please check if your task is formatted to start a program in "C:\Program Files".In an X64 install you will most likely not find it there, it will be in the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)" instead. It could be as simple as that! Robert

I tried your fix and it eliminated a number of keys that had been installed by Creative Labs software for the SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme Audion card I have installed. However, that did not fix the problem. The problem is created on my machine by the installation of Norton 360. When I turn off Norton's Anti-Virus and Firewall, Windows Task Scheduler runs normally. The error I get in the Event Viewer indicates that Defrag cannot be started. I think that is caused by Norton, they want to have priority for their defrag utility. I will try to find a way to stop the Norton Defrag from running and that should remove the conflict with Windows Defrag and get rid of the error message and hopefully the problem I had with Task Scheduler not being able to stop Scheduled Tasks on shutdown.
