Problems with OE6
I have OE6 on my PC (running Windows XP Media edition). On one of the four accounts (my wife's - would you beleive it!) OE6 has just vanished - pouff! The .dbx and .wab files are still there, but when I click the OE icon, I get nothing. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling using the Install/delete Windows Components Wizard via the Control Panel, but no joy.Any ideas people??Alastair1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi Al_in_notts, Try the following: Reregister Outlook Express Damaged or missing entries in the Windows registry can prevent Outlook Express from being recognized as the default e-mail client. That it turn can cause odd behavior when replying to a newsgroup message or clicking an e-mail link on a Web page. A simple procedure causes Outlook Express to rewrite its main registry keys and so corrects such issues. 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type msimn /reg, and then click OK. (Note that you will not see anything happen.) 3. In Internet Explorer click Options on the Tools menu. 4. Click the Programs tab and select Outlook Express as the default e-mail client and as the default news client. You can change those later if you wish. Reregister libraries Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) are files that contain functions that may be shared by other programs, such as recognizing hyperlinks, displaying rich content, and so forth. These specific DLLs are used by Outlook Express, and can cause glitches in the visual display if they are damaged. Reregistering a DLL using regsvr32 is similar to reinstalling those functions and thus makes sure they are installed and working correctly. 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK. 3. Repeat step 1 for each of the following commands:regsvr32 mshtml.dllregsvr32 shdocvw.dll regsvr32 browseui.dll regsvr32 msjava.dll Hope that helps!! Alastair, If you click Start, Run, type msimn.exe and press Enter, it should open. Does that work?Cody C Microsoft Answers Support Engineer Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3?Does the behavior persist in a brand-new User Account? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?OE-specific newsgroup support: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

Thanks for this - my answers are below....Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3? SP3Does the behaviour persist in a brand-new User Account? Well it only manifests itself in a current accoint - and only 1 of the 4 we have. I tried to set up a new account for my wife on my login and still cannot access it. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Norton 360 Premier. All paid up and running. Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? Not that I am aware. I bought the PC new 2 years ago and have always had Norton on it.I hope this allows you to suggest a remedy!Alastair

Norton applications are notorious for not upgrading (or uninstalling) cleanly. Try this:1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe 2. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar). 3. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key handy, uninstall Norton 360 (as well as LiveUpdate and any Norton Add-ons) via Add/Remove Programs. 4. IMPORTANT! => Enable the Windows Firewall immediately after rebooting.NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #7 below! 5. Double-click on the file you saved in #1 above to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot. 6. Do a clean install of Norton 360 2010 using your Product ID & reboot: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN TIP: Do not enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton Anti-Phishing) just yet.TIP: Do not enable email scanning. Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no additional protection, it may have been causing the problem, and even Symantec says it's not necessary: <QP>Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.</QP>Source: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002111812533106 7. Manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate until you get a "no more updates" prompt. 8.
