Problems with Internet Connection
Hello, im having problems with a laptop i recently bought. The laptop is a toshiba satellite p200, which has vista home premium installed. I have updated my computer to sp1 using a 3 usb 3g modem while i was in the uk, but now i live overseas in russia to be exact. I have an internet connection into my house which strangely is just a lan (rj45cable) that pops through the wall. There is no modem it just connects into the lan port on the computer. The system works fine on my girlfriends computer which is xp(its what im typing on now)but all i can get is a local area connection with my laptop i desparatly need to update all my antivirus spyware software because there there are lots of nasty things lurking on flash memorys and cds around here. Could anybody help me with some simple advice as how to get an internet connection that works, all i get is `Internet explorer cannot display the webpage` im not set to `work offline` if you need me to supply anymore information to help please ask also i have norton antivirus installed. Im not really in a position to go and buy a copy of xp or upgrade vista as the laptop is a week old and i dont think i should be doing this, also getting a legal version of vista or xp here is a bit of lottery any help would be much appreciated thanks richard

Hi, I cannot guarantee that any of these might solve your issues but here are a few suggestions * Is your friend using a static IP address or has she registered here Mac address with the apartment building because a lot of times mac filtering is on and if her machine is on the list and yours is not, it will not let you get out. * Also can you try to setup Internet connection sharing on the Xp machine and see if you can go out that way (here is a useful link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126) * Until you get this addressed, you can always download the standalone installer of the Norton Updates from this URL http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html(Download it on your girlfriends computer and transfer it over) Hope this helps.
