Problems using logman -cf to load counters from file.
I'm trying to use logman to register a list of counters I want to monitor from a file. According to the documentation the file should contain one counter per line. I use an elevated command prompt and use something like: logman create counter myCounters -cf mycounters.txt Logman says it completes succesfully but when I look at the counter collection in perfmon I get one entry that is just a backslash. this behaviour occurs for all of the following syntaxes: \Processor(*)\% Processor Time \Processor(*)\* \\machinename\Processor(*)\* I also tested all of the above surrounded by double quotes as show on the Performance Team's logman blog. The double quote variations always say something is wrong with the parameter. How is the logman -cf option supposed to be used in order to get all of the counters in the file into the data collector set? thanks!

Hi housten, Yes, your command is correct. Actually, if you got the The command completed successfully message, it means the system accept those counters. Pls understand that run this command will not start the logging automatically. In performance monitor, you can find the counter under Data Collect Sets -> User Defined(it would display as myCounters in your computer). If you would like to see or collect a customized report, pls right click myCounters and click start, the perfmon tool will recording those data and save them to "C:\PerfLogs\YourUserName\ myCounters_000001.blg, you can stop the logging at any time and check the final chart under Reports->User Defined -> myCounters. Any problem?

I know the logging won't start when I use this command; I am still just trying get my counters entered. When I go to look at the counters in the data collector set, I can see the new Data Collector set that I have created, and I can see the new Counter set in the DCS exists, but there is only one counter entry in the counter set and it contains a single backslash and not a counter name.

Just double click the item under DCS, can you find it all Performance counters you've added in Properties? Is there any error or warning when you try to "Start myCounters' logging under DCS? You can upload the screen so we can get a better image. Use SkyDrive to upload collected files and post screen shot/picturehttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65/#3ba3b4aa-da82-4520-9b7a-3097c81b0366PS: I use the counters youve listed as a test and there is no problem

I don't receive any errors when I start up the logging. However when I stop it and try to look at the data it says there aren't enough samples and no counters appear to be available.

1.Can you click Add and add counters manually without error?2.Pls paste the mycounters.txt here or use the following two counters as a test.\Processor(*)\% Processor Time\Processor(*)\*3.For the not enough samples error, pls make sure the perfmon tool run long enough to track the related counters.Meanwhile, I want to put in that you should consider check the service named Performance Logs & Alerts, can you restart the service without any error? Perfmon will start the service automatically when you start logging, but it may cause potential issues if this service was corrupted/failed to start or stop.
