Problems getting TCP/IP protocol after reloading Windows XP
My hard drive on my laptop went bad, and I replaced it and reloaded all the software again. I have been in touch with Netgear about the router, and established WEP security and a network name and key. The computer shows the Internet is connected and the signal strength is excellent. However, the wireless connection status box indicates that the TCP/IP information is all unavailable. I cannot connect to the computer. The Netgear folks were unable to help. Can you help? Thanks!2 people need an answerI do too

After you installed Windows, did you then install drivers for all your hardware? This includes your wireless network adapter. From what you wrote, it sounds like you are missing these drivers. Go to the laptop mftr.'s website and get all the drivers and laptop utilities for your specific model laptop. As an aside, you don't have your wireless network set up securely if you are using WEP. See below. Have a computer connected to the router with an ethernet cable. Examples given are for a Linksys router. Refer to your router manual or the router mftr.'s website for default settings if you don't have a Linksys. Open a browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox and in the addressbar type: http://192.168.1.1 [enter] (this is the router's default IP address, which varies from router to router so check your manual) This will bring you to router's login screen. The default username is left blank and the Linksys default password is "admin" without the quotes. Enter that information. You are now in the router's configuration utility. Your configuration utility may differ slightly from mine. The first thing to do is change the default password because *everyone* knows the default passwords for various routers. Click on the Administration link at the top of the page. Enter your new password. WRITE IT DOWN SOMEWHERE YOU WILL NOT LOSE IT . Re-enter the password to confirm it and click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page. The router will restart and present you with the login box again. Leave the username blank and put in your new password to get back into the configuration utility. Now click on the Wireless link at the top of the page. Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from the default to something you will recognize. I suggest that my clients not use their family name as the SSID. For example, you might wish to name your wireless network "CastleAnthrax" or the like. ;-) Click the Save Settings and when you get the prompt that your changes were successful, click on the Wireless Security link which is right next to the Basic Wireless Settings link (where you changed your SSID). Most computers purchased within the last 4 years have wireless hardware that will support WPA2-Personal (also called WPA2-PSK). This is the encryption level you want. If your wireless hardware is older, use WPA. Do not use WEP as that is easily cracked within minutes. So go ahead and set the Security Mode to WPA2-Personal. Do that and enter a passphrase. For example, you might use the passphrase, "Here be dragons, beware you scurvy dogs!". The passphrase is what you will enter on any computers that are allowed to connect to the wireless network. WRITE IT DOWN SOMEWHERE YOU WILL NOT LOSE IT . At this point, your router is configured and if the computer you were using to configure the router is normally going to connect wirelessly, disconnect the ethernet cable and the computer's wireless feature should see your new network. Enter the passphrase you created (exactly as you wrote it with all capitalization and punctuation) to join the network and start surfing. I seem to have the same problem. All drivers reinstalled following a terminal crash of a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop and cold reformat / reinstall of XP. Everything works fine except that there is no wireless network icon in Network Connections page. The software reports that the connection to my router is established and that the signal strength is excellent. When I click the properties entry in the right-click popout dialogue box I get the hardware manager dialogue and not the dialogue showing all the network services / protocols / existing networks. The same is true of the wired LAN connection icon. When I try to repair the connection I get the error message "TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection. Cannot proceed" but there is no option for me to install this protocol. Is it possible to install this directly from the cabinet files from the XP insatallation disk? If so how? At the moment my laptop is just an expensive doorstop, please show me how I can turn it into an effective piece of hardware once more...

I would go to Fujitsu's website and download the latest drivers for everything, including the chipset and network adapters. This assumes that you restored your computer to factory condition using the mftr.'s recovery process. Therefore there may be newer drivers available. The XP installation disc will not have any drivers for your laptop. You should only get them from Fujitsu's website for your specific model computer. If you already did this, then possibly your motherboard is failing and the "terminal crash" you mention was caused by this hardware failure.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

It is also important to note that if you have the Atheros chipset, the Atheros Wireless Configuration Utility does not play well with multiple networks. If this is the case you may uninstall the software, durring the uninstall it will ask you if you would like to remove the drivers as well, make sure to keep your drivers. Restart if nessicary and check to see if you are able to connect to any networks using the Microsoft Wireless Configuration Utility. -Bone Yard
