Problems changing password
We are having problems changing complex passwords that are 12 characters to passwords that are 15+ characters in Vista Professional, Vista Ultimate and Vista Enterprise.
The message we get is the generic one that the password does not comply with the password requirements of lenght, history, complexity and so forth.
These systems are standalone, and we have tried to reset the password via Computer Management, net user, and scripts.
The same process works on WIndows XP Professional.
We can change the password to another 12 character password succcessfully. We are being required to change all passwords to 15+ characters.
As a work around, we are dropping the user and re-establishing the user with the 15+ character password and that works without any problems.
Any Ideas?

Hi,
Please check if there are any of the following settings configured:
1.
Click
Start, click Control Panel, double-click
Administrative Tools, and then double-click Local Security Policy.
2.
Navigate to the Account Policies\Password Policy folder.
3.
In the details pane, please check the
Enforce password history, Maximum password age, Minimum Password Age, Minimum Password Length, Password must meet complexity requirements
Does the new password which more than 15 characters meets these requirements?
Regards,
Sabrina

I have seen nothing that says net user has a maximum limit of 14 characters.
That doesn't explain why I can delete the user, and recreate it using net user, and a 20 character complex password.
The same problem happens using computer management and scripting tools.

If you type
net help user
you will see the limit mentioned there.
password Assigns or changes a password for the user's account.
A password must satisfy the minimum length set with the
/MINPWLEN option of the NET ACCOUNTS command. It can have as
many as 14 characters.

You are missing the point, I have created a user with a 20 character password successfully via net user; so how can 14 be a max limit? I am reading the help as it's the minimum setting, not maximum setting.
Password exceeds the minimum length and is very complex.
It's just this one application user I am having the problem with. If I drop and readd the user I can change the 14, 20, 32 character password.
Thanks anyway, I think I am going to drop the user via script and recreate it on all the affected systems.
