Problems accessing (non Domain controlled) Internet when Domain controller is down.
Hi I have a home/office network setup that I've recently added a Windows 2008 server to, which is now my ADS/Domain controller. I use this server for particular "office" services at home so for example I can be at home with my "office hat" on using my Windows 7 laptop to access TFS services on this server. Other times I want to just wear my "home hat" and access non domain things on my network: the internet, play tunes from my NAS devices etc. Generally this is fine. So here's my problem: I want to be able to only have my Windows 2008 server switched on when I have my "office" hat on, but I also want to always sign on to my Windows 7 laptop as my Domain user. I can get my NAS working like this quite easily but have problems with Intenet browsing. I connect ok to my router wirelessly but Internet browsing is only available if the server is up. Logically this shouldn't be a problem I think because my router offers web access without reference to the domain and I sucessfully accessed it previously as a workgroup member. I get the impression that the problem is that as a domain client my laptop isn't "looking for" the router's internet service- because it expects the server to do this. In support of this theory: I can get my NAS devices working in this mode with the server switched off, by adding a hosts file entry for the NAS and my domain name and password to the Credentials Manager for my NAS. ... but not sure what would be analogous to this fix for internet browsing? Should switching off the Domain controller affect your access to non domain controlled facilities like this when you sign on with a domain account? Even general pointers would be much appreciated...
