Problems Joining a domain
I figured I would start a new thread with this problem. It has been mentioned in a different thread about a different problem so I figured it would be best to have one of my own.I am trying to get my laptop on the domain here at work. When my admin goes to enter in his user name and password, we get the error..."The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted."Any ideas? I think that this issue is not related to the long domain problem (mine is 13 characters long). Here is a copy of the log for what was happening:01/14/2009 10:58:29:950 -----------------------------------------------------------------01/14/2009 10:58:29:968 NetpValidateName: checking to see if 'BHOLMES3' is valid as type 1 name01/14/2009 10:58:30:036 NetpCheckNetBiosNameNotInUse for 'BHOLMES3' [MACHINE] returned 0x001/14/2009 10:58:30:036 NetpValidateName: name 'BHOLMES3' is valid for type 101/14/2009 10:58:30:159 -----------------------------------------------------------------01/14/2009 10:58:30:159 NetpValidateName: checking to see if 'bholmes3' is valid as type 5 name01/14/2009 10:58:30:159 NetpValidateName: name 'bholmes3' is valid for type 501/14/2009 10:58:30:236 -----------------------------------------------------------------01/14/2009 10:58:30:236 NetpValidateName: checking to see if 'MANUFACTURING' is valid as type 3 name01/14/2009 10:58:30:337 NetpCheckDomainNameIsValid [ Exists ] for 'MANUFACTURING' returned 0x001/14/2009 10:58:30:337 NetpValidateName: name 'MANUFACTURING' is valid for type 301/14/2009 11:15:33:449 -----------------------------------------------------------------01/14/2009 11:15:33:450 NetpDoDomainJoin01/14/2009 11:15:33:450 NetpMachineValidToJoin: 'BHOLMES3'01/14/2009 11:15:33:450 OS Version: 6.101/14/2009 11:15:33:450 Build number: 7000 (7000.winmain_win7beta.081212-1400)01/14/2009 11:15:33:451 SKU: Windows 7 Ultimate01/14/2009 11:15:33:451 NetpDomainJoinLicensingCheck: ulLicenseValue=1, Status: 0x001/14/2009 11:15:33:452 NetpGetLsaPrimaryDomain: status: 0x001/14/2009 11:15:33:452 NetpMachineValidToJoin: status: 0x001/14/2009 11:15:33:452 NetpJoinDomain01/14/2009 11:15:33:452 Machine: BHOLMES301/14/2009 11:15:33:452 Domain: MANUFACTURING01/14/2009 11:15:33:452 MachineAccountOU: (NULL)01/14/2009 11:15:33:453 Account: MANUFACTURING\kgeorge01/14/2009 11:15:33:453 Options: 0x42501/14/2009 11:15:33:453 NetpValidateName: checking to see if 'MANUFACTURING' is valid as type 3 name01/14/2009 11:15:33:556 NetpCheckDomainNameIsValid [ Exists ] for 'MANUFACTURING' returned 0x001/14/2009 11:15:33:556 NetpValidateName: name 'MANUFACTURING' is valid for type 301/14/2009 11:15:33:556 NetpDsGetDcName: trying to find DC in domain 'MANUFACTURING', flags: 0x4000101001/14/2009 11:15:41:077 NetpDsGetDcName: failed to find a DC in the specified domain: 0x54b, last error is 0x001/14/2009 11:15:41:077 NetpJoinDomainOnDs: NetpDsGetDcName returned: 0x54b01/14/2009 11:15:41:077 NetpJoinDomainOnDs: Function exits with status of: 0x54b01/14/2009 11:15:41:077 NetpDoDomainJoin: status: 0x54b01/14/2009 11:15:41:128 -----------------------------------------------------------------01/14/2009 11:15:41:128 NetpDoDomainJoin01/14/2009 11:15:41:128 NetpMachineValidToJoin: 'BHOLMES3'01/14/2009 11:15:41:128 OS Version: 6.101/14/2009 11:15:41:128 Build number: 7000 (7000.winmain_win7beta.081212-1400)01/14/2009 11:15:41:130 SKU: Windows 7 Ultimate01/14/2009 11:15:41:130 NetpDomainJoinLicensingCheck: ulLicenseValue=1, Status: 0x001/14/2009 11:15:41:130 NetpGetLsaPrimaryDomain: status: 0x001/14/2009 11:15:41:130 NetpMachineValidToJoin: status: 0x001/14/2009 11:15:41:130 NetpJoinDomain01/14/2009 11:15:41:130 Machine: BHOLMES301/14/2009 11:15:41:130 Domain: MANUFACTURING01/14/2009 11:15:41:130 MachineAccountOU: (NULL)01/14/2009 11:15:41:130 Account: MANUFACTURING\kgeorge01/14/2009 11:15:41:130 Options: 0x42701/14/2009 11:15:41:130 NetpValidateName: checking to see if 'MANUFACTURING' is valid as type 3 name01/14/2009 11:15:41:231 NetpCheckDomainNameIsValid [ Exists ] for 'MANUFACTURING' returned 0x001/14/2009 11:15:41:231 NetpValidateName: name 'MANUFACTURING' is valid for type 301/14/2009 11:15:41:231 NetpDsGetDcName: trying to find DC in domain 'MANUFACTURING', flags: 0x4000101001/14/2009 11:15:41:232 NetpDsGetDcName: failed to find a DC in the specified domain: 0x54b, last error is 0x001/14/2009 11:15:41:232 NetpJoinDomainOnDs: NetpDsGetDcName returned: 0x54b01/14/2009 11:15:41:233 NetpJoinDomainOnDs: Function exits with status of: 0x54b01/14/2009 11:15:41:233 NetpDoDomainJoin: status: 0x54bAny help would be greatly appreciated.Cheers!

When you say, your admin enters credentials, do you mean when he/she is adding the computer to the domain or just trying to logon to the computer? If when trying to logon, did your admin join the computer to the domain first?

Yes, he was trying to add the computer to the domain using his credentials, not just logging in.

Can you post the results of ipconfig /all? Do you have two NICs? If you do disable one, preferably the wireless if you have a wireless NIC.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Can I kick start this one again please. This is just what I need. I have gone to the hotfix page and requested the hotfix. The link picks up a trailing close bracket and doesn't work. Even if you strip out the bracket it does not work. Scrub that I have just found the file download box behind a load of other windows. Should it not be in front so it can be seen? BFN

Does your client has configured as principal DNS Server the ip ofa Domain Controller running theDNS Service, or maybe it has configuredexternal Internet DNS Servers? This is the main reason to not find a domain when trying to join it. If so, change the client DNSconfiguration so it hasonly Domain DNS Servers, and then try to join the domain using FQDN sintax instead of Netbios sintax (use your.domain.com asdomain name to join and user@your.domain.com as the user with privileges to join a computer to a domain). Dois it work now or you have still the problem? Jose Antonio Quilez
