Problem with wireless connection to WD Sharespace from my Vista Home Premium laptop
I have a Network Area Storage device (WD Sharespace) in my home network. Theproblem is that I can't connect to it in anyway through wireless on my Vista laptop. When wired everything works as it should but when wireless I can neitherreach the web interface of the NAS nor browse to any shares on it.Note the wireless adapter i functional and Ihave access to internet. It is just access to my NAS that is not working from wireless connection. From my old XP professional laptop everything works fine also wireless so itis clearly Vista related.Details: My wireless network is Private (not public).I've tried to disable ipv 6.I've tried to change the ntlm settings with values from 0 to 3, none of this values correct my problem.

Does the NAS respond to ping from your Vista client? If not, please try to traceroute the NAS itself; from both the XP and Vista clients. My guess would be that the packets are routed differently when on the wired network, than on the wireless network. Please keep in mind that Vista has a higher default IPsec and security measures (For instance; XP = Respond only, Vista = Require security).Do not confuse this with the problem you are experiencing.Basic network functionality (i.e. ICMP) should work before commencing further troubleshooting.Good luck, and godspeed.

Thanks for you reply. Yes, the NAS box respond to ping. I can also see it when I run Network Discovery tool from Vista. I've trid to manually map a shared catalog on it - and it worked fine - but when I tried to browse the share - it failed with error messages which could indicate missing of permissions.

Great! This eliminates the route as the cause. If you manage to map a share directly, without having to provide access from the NAS, then it seems as if the default share is set with a too strict permission level.Did you share the folder on the root, or within an existing share?Areyou able to browsethe shared folder when typed directly in Explorer, or are you required to map the share first?Does this behaviour only exist on your Vista client? Is the browsing feature the only feature not working?

The share I've tried to map was an existing share at the NAS. I can neither reach the web interface of the NAS.This is only a problem when I connect wireless from Vista home Premium. When wired from the same laptop its okey. It also works when I connect wireless from anXP Pro laptop.

What we know at this point is that you can access the web interface from both computers when you are connected to the wired network, but not from the Vista computer when you are connected to the wireless one. This is why I suspected routing as a point of failure. You tested earlier that ping (ICMP) was carried over the wireless, hence confirming basic network communication between the Vista client and the NAS.Because you already verified the routing, I would like you to attempt communication on port 80.You can verify this with the command TELNET 192.168.1.1 80 (replace IP with the proper IP for the NAS).If successful, you will get a message on screen. If port 80 is blocked either in transit, or at the NAS-unit, then it will fail trying to connect to port 80.What this will tell us is wether port 80 is open or not.My guess is that it is not. If so, then we'd identified the issue.I'd like to mention that various NAS vendors carries various features. One common feature I've often seen is disabling remote administration of the web console. However, if the XP client manages to connect to the web site using the wireless network, please disconcern this triviality.

This usually happens when you try to connect to any Vista machine, the problem is that the My Book is formatted to FAT32 by default which is not recognised by Vista, it has to be NTFS which is the format originally in NT, you need to connect it to an XP or earlier machine copy all the data off, reformat to NTFS and copy your data back. Your My Book will then be compatible with both XP and Vista and the new Windows 7
