Problem with upgrading to 3GB of DDR RAM in a PC with the XP Pro OS
I have had 2 DDR RAM memory modules of 512MB each for some time in my PC and decided to expand to 3GB by adding 2 more modules of 1GB each. I have an Abit motherboard with 4 slots that is rated to 4GB RAM max, and my XP Pro is also rated to 4GB. However, when I installed the additional modules the system continued to tell me that I only had 1GB of RAM. So, I took out the two 512BM modules to see if the problem was the new 1GB units... but nothing changed, in that I'm still being informed that I have 1GB RAM (even though I now have two 1GB modules in place). Everything I've found on-line only refers to expanding beyond 4BG, which is not helpful, and I've not been able to find any system on my PC that would allow me to manually adjust for the added 2GB of RAM. What can I do to be sure that I'm getting the use of all 3GB of RAM when all four of the modules are in place?

Hi Mykesart, There are various factors due to which the RAM may not be getting detected. The following Microsoft article has some information and things to consider before upgrading RAM and troubleshooting RAM installations: Add more memory to your computer http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/addmemory.aspx How to Troubleshoot RAM Installations http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/ballew_tshootram.mspx The RAM reported by the System Properties dialog box and the System Information tool is less than you expect in Windows Vista or in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later version http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888137 Additionally, since the operating system you’re using is Windows XP, I’d be moving this thread to Windows XP Forums for better assistance. Hope this helps.Gokul - Microsoft Support [If this post was helpful, please click the "Vote as Helpful" (green triangle) button.
