Problem with drag and drop when running a program as an administrator...
I need to run Visual Studio with Administrator privileges because some of the post build steps in my project require elevated permissions. When I run as an Admin though, Vista won't let me drag and drop files from Explorer onto Visual Studio in order to open them. Is there a work around for the drag and drop problem, or any way that I can run Explorer as an admin? When I right click and try to set the compatibility mode, Vista says I can't set the compatibility mode because the program is part of Windows.Thanks,--Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, To launch Explorer with a full privilege token, follow these steps: 1. Log onto the computer with an account that has administrator permission. 2. Open an elevated command prompt: a. Right-click cmd.exe. b. Select Run as administrator. 3. Open Task Manager. a. Right-click the taskbar. b. Select Task Manager. c. Select the Processes tab. d. Select explorer.exe. e. Select End Process. 4. Type explorer.exe in the elevated command prompt. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Thank you. Is there any way, though, to make explorer run as admin all of the time. I would be kind of a pain to repeat this process every time I reboot....Thanks,--Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, Please understand that Explorer is always run with a less privilege token when logged on with an elevated account and UAC is enabled. UAC is to improve computer security. As a result, the recommended solution is to make the program fully compatible with Windows Vista. For a temporary workaround, Ive listed two options below: 1. Disable UAC. To do so, follow these steps:1) Click Start , click Control Panel, click User Accounts and Family Safety, and then click User Accounts.2) Click Turn User Account Control on or off.3) Click to clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box, and then click OK.4) Restart the computer. 2. Log onto the Windows Vista machine with built-in administrator account. This user account is always logs on with only the full access token. In addition, Ive included the UAC related articles for your reference: User Account Control http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905108.aspx Windows User Account Control Step-by-Step Guide http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVista/en/library/0d75f774-8514-4c9e-ac08-4c21f5c6c2d91033.mspx?mfr=true Hope it helps.
