Problem with Windows Update KB3000850

We have a Volume License agreement for Windows, with Software Assurance which gives us access to Windows 8.1 Enterprise. We also have a number of hybrid Windows 8.1 tablets on which we need to install Enterprise. However we have encountered a problem which after extensive testing we have isolated as being caused by update KB3000850. Unfortunately, Enterprise is only available from the Volume Licensing Service Center in a version that already includes the faulty KB3000850 update, in a non-removable way.

So my question is, is there:

  1. A way to get Windows 8.1 Enterprise volume license ISO that does not already include the KB3000850, or
  2. A way to remove the KB3000850 update from the Enterprise that has it built in (we tried clicking it in Programs and Features, Uninstall is not an available option), or
  3. Someone we can talk to about our specific problem to get the faulty KB3000850 update fixed?

More details on the problem:

The tablets are Dell Venue 11 Pro, with Dell's optional keyboard/touchpad accessory. The actual issue is that when KB3000850 is installed, regular domain users become unable to right-click using the accessory touchpad. Administrator users are not affected, and the issue also does not occur when KB3000850 is not installed. This issue occurs whether the OS is Windows 8.1 Pro (supplied with the tablets) or Windows 8.1 Enterprise. We do not have a GPO that imposes this limitation, as the issue does not occur when KB3000850 is not installed. Users can plug in an external mouse and successfully right-click with this, however that is a cumbersome workaround that negates the value of the devices. We have observed the problem on 3 different models of Dell Venue 11 Pro (5130-32bit, 5130-64bit and 7130) and with both types of keyboard/touchpad accessory (Slim and Mobile).

Hello Dan Jackson,

Do you mean that the Dell Venue 11 Pro with KB3000850 cant right click the touchpad?

Please try to update the touchpad driver from the manufacturer website.

Please take a look at the following screenshot about update KB 3000850.
It seems that I can uninstall it normally.

Best regards,

The version of Windows 8.1 Enterprise that is currently available from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center comes with KB3000850 built in. The Uninstall option does not appear in this version of Windows for this update.

The situation is, with a Dell Venue 11 Pro, with KB3000850 installed on Windows 8.1 (Pro or Enterprise, I have tested it with both), joined to a domain, logged in with a standard (non admin) domain user, the right-click on the touchpad accessory does not work. However it is a software problem as if you plug in a normal USB mouse, the right-click of that works fine.

Did the Dell tablets come with a McAfee free-trial or a Norton free-trial [PICK ONE] preinstalled by any chance?

Hi, sorry, I did not get a notification there was a new post in this thread.

The 7130 variant does come with McAfee (which we immediately uninstall as we use a different product) but the 5130 variant does not.

Thanks,

Did you (a) uninstall the McAfee free-trialware AND THEN (b) download/run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool & reboot (c) BEFORE you installed the replacement application?

  • McAfee (and Norton) Consumer applications are notorious for not uninstalling (or upgrading) cleanly. The "leftovers" may be your troublemaker here.

OK, but this does not explain why this problem is also happening on the 5130 models, which do not come with any McAfee or Norton at all.

First things first: Did running the removal tool, followed by a reboot, resolve the behavior on the 7130 box?

We're experiencing exactly the same problem. We install Windows 8.1 through SCCM on the tablets (7130 vPro) and use System Center Endpoint Protection (so no McAfee).
KB3000850 is included in our image.
Logged in as administrator the right-click from the touchpad works fine, but as a regular user it does not work.
Using an external mouse the right-click works fine.

Great to hear that I'm not going mad! I don't have one of the 7130 models available so I can't try the McAfee thing here, but it definitely seems like it's a problem with the update rather than anything else.

We don't have McAfee installed so that's not the problem. Weird thing is though that we have some tablets where it actually works but I can't find a reason for it. Guess I'll have to open a case with Dell and hope they can figure this out.

The problem that we have is that SW_DVD9_SA_Win_Ent_8.1_64BIT_English_-3_MLF_X19-84068.ISO from the VLSC includes KB3000850 built in, and that update cannot be removed from it. So we'd need to somehow be able to get an older version of the ISO without this update included, in order to deal with the problem.

It might be that the ISO we need is SW_DVD9_SA_Win_Ent_8.1_64BIT_English_-2_MLF_X19-49847.ISO.

I experimented a bit further and found out it must be something wrong in the user profile of the user.

I first created a local user on the tablet and with that user the right-mouse click worked fine.

Next I removed the profile of the user where it did not work (since we use roaming profiles I removed it both locally and on the file server). Then I logged on again with that user and right-mouse was working!

I agree with Stefan, the problem seems to be related to the profile.  We have over 300 Dell Venue 11's, 5130, 7130 and 7140 models.  When a user logs on with an existing 8.1 roaming profile they cannot right click.  If we .old the profile and recreate it they are able to though.  Anyone that's never been on a 8.1 PC is okay though.
Still have not found a solution to this other then to wipe the profile and start fresh.

We use MDT 2013 with a sysprepped Enterprise 8.1 image that has all current windows updates installed. I would rather not revert back to an older image. I am guessing its a registery key somewhere that needs to be deleted. Will keep looking :)

Hi wish I'd found this thread earlier been banging my head on this one with Dell for a couple of weeks now.

Anbody made progress in what this missing bit is in the profile and how to add it in afterwards or to a default.v4 in sysvol?

Quick update.

I have a case open with Dell Pro Support on this and have referenced this thread.  We've tried to sysprep on the Dell Venue 11 PRO 7140 tablets to make new default profiles for our network but this just causes the tablets to BSOD after the sysprep.  No quick fix that way it seems.

I'll update if we find a solution I'd love to hear if anybody else is also having this issue.

Cheers
