Problem with Windows 7: Unidentified Network / Local Area Connection - SOMEONE Please Help Me
I’m having a real nightmare with my Windows 7 Install. Pleeeeeeeez help.
Andy.
Ø Running a Sony Vaio VGN-A317M
Ø Have also got a Samsung XP laptop, running and connecting perfectly.
Ø Complete new install of Windows 7 Home Premium (from XP) on the Sony
Ø Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor said I would have to look at:
o Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
o TI PCI7420 Integrated Flashmedia Controller
o Norton Antivirus
o I installed anyway !
Ø Install seemed to go just fine
Ø I have not installed any other software. No Firewall. No Virus Protection. No Nothing ! Just standard Windows 7 Install software.
Ø With internet connection got:
o Local Area Connection" “doesn't have a valid IP configuration”
o Have also got Unidentified network / Public network settings and CANNOT get these to change
Ø I’ve tried various fixes from various forums but CANNOT get an internet connection
Ø I’m now plugged in via an Ethernet cable to my DLINK router (have tried with 3 different Ethernet cables)
Ø The router is working fine with my other (Samsung) laptop, using http://192.168.1.1
Ø CANNOT connect to http://192.168.1.1 using the Sony
o “IE cannot display the webpage”
Ø I “pretty sure !” I’ve updated the Realtek PCI GBE Family Controller driver properly, by downloading MANUALLY (via other laptop), but it *was* called something else before I updated the driver (can’t remember exactly what it was called before)
Ø Also, when I was trying to fix the problem I think I disabled the Wireless Connection (to simplify the network situation !), and now I can’t see it, or re-enable it any more. It’s not listed in Network adapters in Device Manager.
Ø Anyway, can’t connect to my DLINK router with the Sony, but I can with my XP Laptop using http://192.168.1.1 All seems normal there.
o DHCP Info is:
§ Starting IP Address 192.168.1.2
§ Ending IP Address 192.168.1.254
§ Primary DNS 192.168.1.1
o LAN ( not WAN) info is:
§ IP Address 192.168.1.1
§ Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
o WAN Info is:
§ IP Address 79.156.190.238
§ Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
§ Default Gateway 192.168.153.1
§ DNS Server 80.58.61.250
Ø I’ve tried to set a static IP address as follows, but this did not work
o IP Address 192.168.1.22
o Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
o Default gateway 192.168.1.1
o DNS server 192.168.1.1
Ø After trying all of the above my config/all is as follows:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

Uninstall Norton, reboot and try again. Which exact DLink router and whatfirmware? People are reporting issues with the DIR-615, some get relief byunbinding IPv6 from the network adapters. Do a system restore to a point wherethe wireless was working.Barb Bowman

Having same problems as BonzoBall . I followed Bard's instructions for unbinding IPv6. Problem persists.
I have 3 Sony Vaio laptops (wireless) and a Dell desktop (hard-wired). All work fine except for my newest laptop (new is relative - it is a year old). I am using a Lynksis WRT45G wireless router. I am running Win 7 upgrades on 2 of the 3 laptops and the desktop. I am running Win Vista on the 3rd laptop. The laptop that will not connect to the internet is running Win 7.
Disabled Norton - same problems.
Tried to ping google.com - "could not find host"
Then ping 74.125.77.104 - "100% loss"

I have the SAME problem also. Is there a fix for this or is it another reinstall of windows ?

what router? what firmware? what network adapter and do you have the latest
driver? Since there are really a couple of issues reported in this thread, a
detailed summary of YOUR problem and when it started would help.
