Problem using internet connection sharing
Dears, I have a problem using internet connection sharing. I have one laptop with Windows XP connected to my company LAN and accessing internet successfully via the company proxy server. I have a second laptop with Windows 7. I want to allow this second laptop to access the internet through the Windows XP laptop connection. I connected the two laptops via a computer-to-computer wireless connection. The connection is working fine and I can copy files between the two computers. I enabled internet connection sharing on the Windows XP laptop Local Area Connection. Its wireless connection has IP address 192.168.0.1. The IP address of The Windows 7 Laptop is 192.168.0.80 (automatically acquired). Internet Options on the Windows 7 Laptop is set to "Never dial a connection", not using a proxy, I tried with and without "Automatically detect settings". Now, the network icon in the Windows 7 system tray indicates that the wireless connection HAS internet access. Also, in the Network and Sharing Center, the wireless connection access type is "internet". So, Windows 7 knows that this wireless network has internet access. However, both internet explorer and fire fox cannot open any web sites. Exactly as if there were no internet connection!. They give "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www…………...com ." respectively. Internet is working properly on my Windows XP laptop. Also, when I connect the Windows 7 laptop to the LAN using a UTP cable or wireless connection, internet works properly on it. I just cannot access the internet via internet connection sharing although Windows 7 feels there is internet access on the connection. I tried to disable all network connections other than the wireless connection on the Windows 7 laptop, log off and log on, restart, but still have the problem. On my Windows XP laptop, in the LAN connection properties, Advanced tab, I clicked settings and tried checking the services HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, DNS but also with no avail. I would appreciate if any one can help me fix this problem. Thanks in advance. Regards M.Afifi

Hi, Have you configured the Internet connection sharing correctly? How to configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP Meanwhile, if you connect to internet via a router, when you enable Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP, it sets the local area network connection IP address to 192.168.0.1, which would be conflict with your router. In that case, you could change the router's LAN IP address to one in a different subnet, such as 192.168.1.1, and then check the result. Hope it helps. Thanks a lot Alex for your reply and sorry for my late response. It was a long weekend here. I did all the steps for setting up internet connection sharing on the host (Win XP) and client (Win 7). The only thing is that on the client (Windows 7), when I go to Network and sharing center-->Setup a new connection or network-->Connect to the internet, then it gives me a page with the message "You are already connected to the internet". As I mentioned in my question, Windows 7 feels that there is internet connectivity on this connection but Internet explorer and fire fox cannot open any sites. I am not connecting to the internet via a router. I am using the company proxy server. The IP of the ethernet card on my Win XP machine (the host) is 172.26.56.197 so there is no IP conflict with any other devices. When I try to ping www.google.com or www.yahoo.com from the command prompt, it successfully gets the correct IP but the response is "request timed out". I would really appreciate any help Thanks M.AfifiRegards M.Afifi
