Problem sharing Windows 7 printer and Windows XP (32Bit SP3) laptop
I am having trouble with the final step of printer sharing between an HP Photosmart 7760 series printer attached to W7 computer (HPE 400Z). When I attempt to connect from my laptop i receive an error message telling me "The server for the HP Photosmart 7760 series printer does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to search for the proper driver click OK. Otherwise, click Cancel and contact your network administrator or original equipment manufacturer for the correct printer driver. I don't understand. The printer on the server computer works fine. I can install the driver and run the printer from my laptop without a problem. (I removed the printer before attempting to connect via sharing. HP technical support (live and chat) have been nothing short of a collection of morons who have no clue about what I am trying to do. Can anybody give me an idea how to share this printer with my laptop?

Thanks, but that didn't help. I still get the same message about the printer driver. Could it be due to different drivers between Windows 7 and Windows XP? Everything I read about sharing network printers seems so simple to set up but nowhere do I see this particular problem addressed. I can see the printer on the network from my XP computer but I can't connect to it. I get a pop up error message that says : "File needed: Printer driver INF for HP Photosmart 7760 series." The file "INF." on (unknown) is needed. Type the path where the file is located and click OK. If I knew how to find that file maybe it would be simple, but I don't. If the printer is operation on the windows 7 machine shouldn't the INF file be there? Frustrating, for sure. Any help is greatly appreciated. Bruce Thorkildsen, M.D.

I suggest installing the printer on the XP machine and see if you can see the share on the Windows 7 machine. That arrangement has worked in some print shops I have helped. I still get the same message about the printer driver. Could it be due to different drivers between Windows 7 and Windows XP? Yes, that's it. The laptop with XP doesn't have the drivers included like Vista or Win 7. Download and run the driver package from HP for the 7760 XP. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=305375#N270

Thanks, but I have already tried that and I still get the same message with the XP driver installed in the XP machine. I'm frustrated. I'm going to try a different printer and see what happens.

The 7760 is dated. The best approach would be to directly connect to the XP computer and try to get a share on the Win 7 as Vegan suggested. Finding a printer that is truly network ready (connects to the router or connected via a print server to the router) would be the best solution. If sharing is all that you can accomplish, then a more recent printer would help. Start=>Help and Support=>Share a printer will provide details on configuration.

I think this might be my best solution. I can't really connect the printer to the XP computer because that it a laptop while the Win 7 computer is a desktop that will be stationary. Although i was hoping to aviod it, I guess I will go shopping! Thanks.

Hi, To share a printer you need to first install the printer to any one of the computers in the network. Connect all the cables and provide the power options properly, then select “Control Panel” from the Start menu. In the Control Panel double-click on the icon “Hardware and Sound”. Then click on the icon “Printers”. On the right pane you will see “Add a printer” option, click on it follow the steps to add the printer to the computer. After installing a printer to any one of the computers in the network, you can make the printer a shared one. For sharing the printer select “Control Panel” and then select the “Network and Internet” option. Then click on “Network and Sharing Center”. Now expand the “printer sharing” section and click on “Turn on printer sharing”. Now complete the sharing process by clicking on “Apply” and the printer will be shared with all the computers that are attached to the network. get more help to printer sharing in windows 7 hope this helps you.
