Problem renaming a file on a remote Windows 2003 SBS server from a Vista machine
I am connected from my home to my office serverby a VPN tunnel. The office server is Windows Small Business Server 2003. My machine at home is a desktop machine running Vista Ultimate 32. The problem is when I create a new file on the server I can not re-name it. When I select the new file or any file for that matter, on the server, right click, select "rename File" it takes forever for the server to highlight the file name for re-naming and after re-naming the file, the server will not accept the new file name.I get an error dialog box saying "A file name cannot contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? " < > |" and the file name I am trying to use does not. I can go immediately to my XP laptop and everything works fine, so I know its not the server or the VPN connection. It's something with Vista. Can anyone offer a suggestion? I have already disabled "Offline Files".

Hi, Thank you for your post. Based on my research, I will suggest check the following: 1. Please ensure that you have full control permissions. 2. Please try to rename the file with the command ren 1) Click on the Start button. 2) Type cmd in the search bar. 3) Right click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator. 4) Run the command like the following: REN [drive:][path]filename1 filename2. 3. Please perform the same steps with the same account when you are in the local office (without VPN) and see how it works. Please try the suggestions and let me know the results. Thanks.
