Problem of mapping network drive from Vista Business to a Windows NT 4.0
Hello, Would like to urgently request assistance to anyone that can help. I just purchased a new PC running a Vista Business. I have a Pentium 4 PC running as a server witha Windows NT 4.0 (acting as a domain controller for several of my computers, as well as a file sharing tool). I havethe following problems: 1. To join the new PC to the Domain on my NT server, the Vista PC just would never accept my administrator login name or password upon changing the domain name on the Vista PC. What i had to do was to add the Vista PC directly by using the Server Manager option in the Windows NT Server. Only after that could I join the domain using my Vista PC 2. To map a network drive situated on my Windows NT server to my Vista PC, the same problem as problem 1 happens whereby it would not accept any of my password no matter what i do. Please help! Thanks Faidzal

I am on a workgroup with NAS access is fine for read/write etc. That is until I try to back upmy computer using Vista Ultimate backup facility. Then I get a name, password dialogue pop up and the same error report you have been receiving. another contributor had it right when he said Microsoft should be answering this. It is "new" behaviour and particular to Vista.

This is definitely an issue with the new SMB 2.0 protocol that Microsoft has developed for Vista. It is supposed to roll back to the legacy version but it doesn't always. Any Linux based box or NT based box is going to have issues due to the authentication issues within the SMB 2.0I have two scenarios at work that is affecting me big time and I have fixed one of them on my own while working with Microsoft for close to two months. Since my Vista machine is on a domain and the storage box is on a workgroup and it is a freeBSD based box(with many modifications) it has issues connecting when you use a mapped network drive and having it remember the log on. It won't reconnect after the Vista machine is logged off or rebooted. The fix was to add the local user account specific to the storage box to the AD accounts management. After doing that I have no more problems with it. So I would recommend for those having issues to simply try adding the user to their accounts in either the workgroup, the main server or even the local computer as that will help authenticate the connection properly.Microsoft is aware of this and many other problems like this and hopefully they will figure out a proper fix. They have sent me a couple of hot fixes to try, but still didn't work. One of them had an SP1 in front of it so I wonder if the SP1 patch is close by!

Hi DACTech, I have seen a number of your posting relating to Vista, and in them you say you can map a network drive in XP no problem, I'm struggling to do this and need help - if you could help that would be great. I dont want to fill this subject about XP, therefore if I post on a new thread could you have a look. Thanks

I am having basically the same problem I have 3 computers including the new one.. I had to buy a new computer with Vista and my other 2 have Windows 2000 installed. I can surf the internet but can not connect the computers together. Both of my 2000 machines see each other but what's up with the vista.?

Anon if you do not have the "Local Security Policy" icon in the Administrative Tools folder then you do not have that "snap-in" installed. Try typing mmc at a command line...access the help system and look up "Adding snap-ins"...specifically "Local Security Policy". good luck cc

type in secpol.msc in the run menu and that should bring up the security policy snap in. It also may be that the business edition doesn't have that snap in installed. You can also change this by going to the registry editor>regedit> and change the LMCompatibilityLevel to 0. HKLM>System>CurrentControlSet>Control>Lsa

You ended my 1 hour trial and errorI had the problem connecting from Vista Ultimate to a Freecom FSG-3 Storage Router (which is basically some Linux-out-of-the-box-file-server). I was able to connect via another Workstation with XP, but not from Vista. Works now from Vista with the changes you mentioned. You made my evening!

Hi,The Local Security Policy is not available in Vista Home or in Vista Home Premium. The complete application secpol.msc is simply missing here. Here is what you can do directly in the registry to reach the same effect.1. run regedit2 Find the key KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa3. Set LmCompatibilityLevel to 1I am glad I started to figure this out on Vista Ultimate, I would have never found the registry key starting with Vista Home PremiumBen?2012

Guys please let me know if this problem falls along the same lines as issues outlined in this thread. I did post it elsewhere but with no help. I have a server setup with a workgroup small network. The file server is XP and I have a number of different PCs setup on it. (XP and Vista). On one Vista PC it seems as though a user account becomes corruptand I am no longer able to map a network drive. When trying to mapI get an error message"the network folder specified is currently mapped using a different username and password. To connect using a different username and password you first have to disconnectany existing mappingsto this network share." The problem that exists is that there is no other mapped drives. When I try to disconnect a mapped network drive I do get an icon flash up, very quickly, then disappear. I don know if I was able to disconnect this hidden drive I would have no problem. If a create a new user I can then connect to the drives no problem. Adam

fantastic, that fixed it- thanks chucky cheese. i installed vista business edition and could not see (or map a drive to) my red hat samba linux server (it kept asking for a logon name and password which xp never did). making this setting immediately made the drive visible and mappable without asking for a logon - well done.

This is becoming a very frustrating problem. Vista basic mapping to XP workgroup doesnt exists. When trying to map a drive I am asked to first disconnect a already mapped drive, but, I dont have any mapped drives. Obviously Vista is holding on to mapped drives somewhere with the incorrect username and password. Where??? They are not in any window when I try to disconnect drive. Maybe someone at Microsoft can help??? As this is not the only PC that I am having trouble with this problem.
May 21st, 2007 9:43am

Completely agree that this is frustrating. No matter what I do, I cannot map an XP share as a drive in Vista due to an existing connection that I have to disconnect first. Well, I can not find this phantom connection and neither can net use. Of all the stupid bugs. You would think that someone at Microsoft HAS to have run across this...

Thanks Gary, I thought that I was the only person in the world that was tiring to map a drive in Vista. Are you having the same problem that when you go to disconnect drives then you see a flash of icons which disappear, I would guess that these are the phantom drives you are speaking about. The funny thing is if a create a new user I am able to connect to the drives and map fine, thats at least until the phantom drives thatwe cant disconnect pop up again. Microsoft please tell me that you did testVista mapping to XP before you released the product, if there is anyone from Microsoft that knows about this issue please feel free to jump in anytime. Adam

Thanks Chucky Cheese!

I actually had to set it to "Send NTLM response only" to work with our Excel Meridian DataNAS.(I don't recommend the NAS in question -- it runs Linux but they won't give us a login, so we can never actually update or modify it ourselves. This might be good for the company, which can sell a support contract, but it's not good for us.)

Hi, your are a genius. I had the same problem and this solution works. Let me summarize my problem and everything I tried before: - I have and old PC with Win2000 Pro and bought a new Vista Laptop. - I wanted to share the printer and the data on the old XP PC and print to the shared printer from the new Vista Laptop. - When connecting to the PC from Vista I received an error message stating that the username or password is not correct. At the same time I was able to connect to Win2000 with another windows XP laptop without problems. - I tried to connect through the GUI or through "net use"- both did not work with different error messages - I verified bottum up all settings - IP connection works with ping - pc is visible through net view - printer and drive are shared - no restrictions are active on the win2000 PC - guest account is not disabled - I have set up user accounts with same passwords on both machines => In the end I was able to figure out that there is a compatibility problem between Win2000 and Vista as described in this threat => I used regedit and set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\LSA\LMCompatibilityLevel to 0 or 1 => Both values 0 or 1 worked After this change I could even delete the duplicate useraccounts on both machines, no password is required on the useraccount as well. When connecting the network drive through the GUI I simply selected "Connect with different username" and it worked. Thanks Roland

Chucky,You are the man. Been working on this for a Windows 7 upgrade for about 6 hours. Same issue. Fix worked like a champ.Best regards,Toneloc
November 7th, 2009 3:03am

Don't know if you already solved this. The easiest workaround is to use the IP address of the share instead of the share name, e.g. Instead of \\myNAS\shared_folder use \\192.168.0.11\shared_folder Hope this helps.
