Problem installing Microsoft Security Scanner
When I try to run the file 'msert.exe', I get the following error: The application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail. The appication gives an error event ID 59, but this does not help me. I have tried this on 2 different pc's, one running Win7 32 bit, and one Win 7 64 bit, and I have downloaded the correct versions each time. The same error occurs in each case. Can anyone assist?

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. Did this issue persist in Clean Boot mode? To find real cause, use sxstrace.exe tool to get more information, you could learn the usage of this tool from the following articles: ‘The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect’ error related to MMC.EXE programs and weird cause & simple solution Diagnosing SideBySide failures Regards, Alex Zhao TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi Alex, I didn't try booting in safe mode to install the msert.exe. My reason for wanting to install it was because I am recommending it to others who have virus problems. I have A/V, and no problems, so as I say, I just wanted to install it out of curiosity, and to see what it looked like and how it works. But it's not such a big deal for me. I have no currect virus problems. Thanks for your interest. I'm markng your answer as the answer for the sake of completeness. I didn't actually try these things, for reasons I've explained.
