Problem connecting to C$, ADMIN$ or any other shared drive on Windows 7
Hope someone can help with this problem. I cannot connect to any of the shares on a particular Windows 7 machine. When I try I get an error that states "A device attached to the system is not functioning. If I manually create a share I cannot connect to it either. I have removed the PC from the domain, added it back in, renamed the machine, turned off the firewall and Anti-Virus, added the LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to the registry (this was a Vista issue before) and nothing. If anyone has any other troubleshooting steps it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gavin...

Hi Gavin, From which version of system you want to access that Windows 7 machine? Can you map the shared drive which is located on Windows 7? When did this issue happen? This issue was happened in Windows Vista and was fixed in service pack 1. I didn't find any similar known issue in Windows 7 yet. Therefore, I suggest you also check the local security policy setting on Windows 7 machine. Run the Local Security Policy App (secpol.msc), Start --> All Programs --> Administrative Tools --> Local Security Policy Go to Local Policies, Security Options and choose "Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level" Set it to "Send LM & NTLM, use NTMLv2 session if negotiated" If it still not work, try to use Network Monitor to capture the network trace, check if you can find any clue. Refer to: How to use Network Monitor to capture network trace. Regards, Miya TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Here is the issue, I am trying to distribute software remotely to the machine and when I try and connect to the ADMIN$ share I get a message that says "A device attached to the system is not functioning" ... from the machine itself I can map to any share on the network and receive all the Group Policies assigned to the machine, just cannot access the machine remotely however RDP works fine but if I try with VNC or Dameware it will not connect. I have made all the changes in the registry and nothing is working. I can ping the machine fine and it resolves correctly, I get the same error when I try with the IP or Hostname. If I create a new share on the system I cannot access it either. Also when I search for the machine in the network I can't find the machine either. I have tried with the firewall off, Anti-Virus off and have made sure that Printer and File sharing is enabled and that network discovery is on. At this point short of re-imaging the machine I am stumped.

Ok I figured out the problem. This is a Lenovo ThinkPad and there is a setting in the Access Connections that was blocking access remotely to the machine. As soon as I removed the profile that was created I was able to access the machine remotely.
