Problem With Task Scheduler
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 With All Patches The Task Scheduler seems to be corrupted. If I open it as an administrator and click on Task Scheduler (Local) it says Reading Data failed. If I click on Refresh I get: --------------------------- Task Scheduler --------------------------- The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- The application event log has: - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM" Guid="{1B562E86-B7AA-4131-BADC-B6F3A001407E}" EventSourceName="DCOM" /> <EventID Qualifiers="49152">10016</EventID> <Version>0</Version> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Opcode>0</Opcode> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2011-09-12T02:42:43.000000000Z" /> <EventRecordID>309774</EventRecordID> <Correlation /> <Execution ProcessID="0" ThreadID="0" /> <Channel>System</Channel> <Computer>NYW7-0011</Computer> <Security UserID="S-1-5-21-972170941-3972812362-1739653630-1002" /> </System> - <EventData> <Data Name="param1">machine-default</Data> <Data Name="param2">Local</Data> <Data Name="param3">Activation</Data> <Data Name="param4">{D63AA156-D534-4BAC-9BF1-55359CF5EC30}</Data> <Data Name="param5">{E10F6C3A-F1AE-4ADC-AA9D-2FE65525666E}</Data> <Data Name="param6">NYW7-0011</Data> <Data Name="param7">SAB_Backup</Data> <Data Name="param8">S-1-5-21-972170941-3972812362-1739653630-1002</Data> <Data Name="param9">LocalHost (Using LRPC)</Data> </EventData> </Event> A while ago I created a folder under Task Scheduler Library and created a backup task under it. This response from Arthur Xie might help. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/1f677dd3-bdb7-4650-9164-d8e2c66b7708 -and- Error message 'The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. The registry contains all of the scheduled tasks listed except the backup one. The event log is working since that is where the error was posted.http://www.saberman.com

refer to this security buliten. It may not seem as if you have anything malicious on your system but this vulnerability will take over as admin and schedule tasks. Check your registry for suspicious modifications.... also another dead giveaway ive seen is if your have tasks such as ipod or apple applications which you know youve never installed or use. Windows media player is another big one this vulnerability uses to stream data. I personaly have used http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-pctuneup to keep mine somewhat in order. this tool will find all of your registry errors, duplicate files, it will dissable all services which the issue may use against you and also dissable any secondary loggons. Hope this helps good luck!! http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/MS11-071 "A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that certain Windows components handle the loading of DLL files. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights."

This system is fully patched. In addition, the problem is that Task Scheduler is not working -- not that it is launching unauthorized tasks. The last I want to do is run a third party registry cleaner. Microsoft -- I see posts about this problem going back over a year. Isn't there a Microsoft tool for reviving Task Scheduler?http://www.saberman.com

You dont by any chance have a defrag task entry (Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/Defrag) that you changed from the default weekly to monthly? If so, you will get this... the only solution Ive been able to get around this is to do a weekly defrag for some strange reason, the task scheduler seems to have a problem with monthly.
